The Worrell 1000 site announced that the 21st running of the Worrell 1000 is planned for May 23 - June 5th of this year. The race will be conducted on F18’s and N20’s with no entry fee. Scoring will be done based upon elapsed time for each class and overall first to finish. It also announced two new rules referred to as Sailing with the Stars and the Designated Sailor Rule.
Since there is only limited information on the web site, I called Mike Worrell and asked him for further comments on what was posted. I told him that I would be publishing his remarks on-line. My questions pertained to the format of the race – I did not get into the finances, past history, TV promotion, etc. (If you really want to get into these details, you can call him directly. His phone number is on the web site.)
First of all, he recognized that there are not a lot of details on the web site. He said that he would be putting more details on the site in the next few weeks. He said that this would include the rules, locations, hotels, registration, etc.
He said that the format of the race would be essentially the same as previous years with the only exception being the “Sailing with the Stars” leg and “Designated Sailor” rule. The “Sailing with the Stars” is designed to create a media event at the start of the race. The “Designate Sailor” rule is modeled after the “Designated Hitter” rule in baseball. It allows teams to substitute sailors on some of the legs. He said that some sailors had difficulty committing to all two weeks of the race and this is an attempt to be more accommodating to those with scheduling conflicts.
This announcement will cause a lot of discussion over the next few months. I report the information as it was relayed to me and with the hope that this will help answer some of the immediate questions about the race.
