In a few weeks I'll be running a short knot tying clinic at our clubs open house - learn to sail program. Anyone have any material prepared for something like this? Ideas? Suggestions? Delgate to FogHorn? smile

Chris,

Have your West River Sailing School Director contact Chuck Parry of RHYCSS .... he has a complete set-up for a Knot-Tieing class ...(someone at WRSC is related somehow w/ Chuck)

Now here's the problem ....

Chuck has scheduled a adult Knot-Tieing competition/event for Sat, March 20th, (3:00pm) at RHYC which is followed by a RHYCSS fundraiser dinner of Spagetti w/ Homemade MEATBALLS(!!!!!).....

Do you wish to hazard a quess as to whom will be making the MEATBALLS ???????

If you want them .... then you know when and were you have to be .....

Aloha .... book it Danno !!!!!

Try this. You can download the whole selection.

Thought this was interesting, too. But not that much of an knothead to use it. There is a 3-D version that demos knots also.

Some of the best knot-tying sites are rock climbers.

Seriously though, Here is a knot-practicing post. I made this as a knot-tying teaching aid for a sailing class. As shown, it is sufficient to practice tying:
  • Stopper-knots (figure-8)
  • Loops (bowline)
  • Bends with lines of equal and unequal diameter (reef knot, sheet bend, etc.)
  • Knots on a post (clove hitch, 2 half-hitches, taut-line hitch, etc.)
  • Cleat knot

Regards,
Eric

My brother (the Scout Master) told me about a variation on the Bowline--the Dragon Bowline.

He tied a regular bowline, then threw the knot end on the ground and held on to the other end of the line as he walked away.

Turns out it was a draggin' bowline.

You ever tried pushing a bowline? Dragon's the way to go.

Best theory I have heard was created by my own Mary Wells -- if you can't tie a good knot, tie a lot of them. smile

Never forget one time were delivering a double-ender from Norfolk to Key West. It was just after a big hurricane hit the Carolinas and in the Intracoastal was not available as many of the bridges were inoperable. So, we went outside at Cape Fear.
We were busting our chops and over powered, so Mary went to the bow, took down the jib and secured it. She did not want me forward as she felt she would not be able to retrieve me as easily as I could retrieve her. That and I am clumsy.
She was gone a long time, but upon her return she assured me it was secured.

We pulled into Fernandina and finally got some sleep. When we woke up the next day it took a couple of hours to untie the jib. What a job she did!
Rick
