Anybody remember when they had the Mini Am. Cup boat races in swimming pools. It was sponsored by Chevy in either the late 80s or early 90s.
It was a nationwide deal. They had giant fans on the end of the pools and marks to round. Usually started 4 boats at a time.
Funny, I held the record for the fastest time, because the pool was outside and the fans were enhanced by a seabreeze.
It was a lot of fun.
Winners were flown to San Diego, I believe for the finals. I lost out on a protest.., bogus at that. And Rick Loewen was the judge.
Still ticked off at that guy for getting me into the internet stuff. smirk

I mentioned it in the related thread, for full-size boats on a river (or hey, in a giant pool in an arena), just get a row of jet engines, maybe put some diffusers to spread the air around, good to go!

I know we are sort spoofing around about this, but for the March Issue I did write my editorial on the subject of perhaps thinking "outside the box" to generate more interest in sailing.
It might be worth some serious thought to come up with some new and exciting ideas for things to do with our boats, and perhaps get others interested as well.

I was only half-joking. I watched some show on the Weather Channel recently, they took a pickup truck with a jet engine in the bed to show what wind does to a mobile home (apparently, aerial shots after hurricanes and tornadoes aren't proof enough)...

Anyway, got me thinking about how to add wind on a larger scale than the big-fan-and-swimming-pool trick they use for model boats.

They used the Mini AC boats that you sit in for one the Wed Night finals of Clear Lake Racing Association one year. It was neat to see.
