Good Luck to all of the teams! What an outstanding list of sailors, you have "No Excuses" (pun) to have a good time wink

I'm hearing no buzz coming from the Alter Cup.

Today I was pleased to see some nice ink on the USSailing.org website linked as the top story at their website:

There's no cell service for some reason around the club, so most people can't get calls in or out. I think that's put a damper on some of the normal chatter. Club has wi-fi, though, so now that boats are assembled and the fleet has arrived, I expect the smack to start simmering.

Committee has indicated the fleet needs to be at the boats at noon today - there will be practice at 1 PM or so. Nice breeze. REALLY nice club. I have always loved the way 10 identical boats look, all lined up and shiny-new.

I'm really excited to be here. I hear that the host has official coverage starting today.

There were a couple of practice races today. The shiny new F-18s must have had a coat of slick'um on the hulls, as many top crews were sliding around and 5 went for a swim while going down wind. Welcome to Galveston bay, where the water is warm as a bath and the waves are short, steep and ready to catch the unwary.

Chris.

C2 - Nice looking boat on the water!!!! There's a couple photos on SA from the practice day. BTW, anyone know if the Alter C2s are "on the market" or are they already sold?

If you ask me, Alter Cup is an excellent marketing opportunity to showcase a new model and get the buzz going...not that the C2 doesn't already have it!!!

I THINK all but one is sold...that's the last I heard about a couple of weeks ago.

I just remembered...

They sold 19 boats. More than what the Alter cup requires.

Do yourself a favor and register at SA.

The white noise ratio is high, but there's a lot of good information on that site.

And its pretty entertaining.

Mike:

I have asked the author if I can post one of the pictures. I know many family and friends that make their daily livelihood from intellectual property, accordingly I am sensitive to posting anyone's work without an OK.

Go ahead and register....They will not bite. BTW, there is a neat feature that allows you to follow a topic.

Well if you take Robbie's boat into account I guess there is one left, poor guy hasn't even had the chance to sail it yet :-) More coming though.

Updates are coming into Sailing Anarchy as the races are concluded.

Race 1 'B' Fleet 05/24/10

As you know, this isn't the actual B fleet at the moment. It is a randomly picked out group. The first 5 teams qualify for the A fleet.

Actual Start Time: 10.35
Conditions – Blowing about 14 Knots from 150 deg, lumpy
First to Windward Mark – Maybe Jason – not known, the wind was shifting and the committee were concerned with re-setting the course. Fast downwind leg.
Roundings at the bottom: Jason, Reiss, DeLave
Windward Mark: Reiss, Jason, Thomas
Finish time: 11

Finishing order:

Position Skipper Name Notes
1 Jason
2 Reiss
3 Thomas
4 Newberry Main came unhooked but got sorted before race start
5 DeLave
6 Palmer
7 Stiemsma
8 Tartaglino
9 Newsome
10 Flanigan Went for a swim on the way to the start line. Lost their spinnaker twice when the jam cleat let go (boat 4). Not planning to protest.

Protests – Tartaglino want re-dress for a bungee breaking that was holding the tack line. Decisions will be published later.

The weights of the teams have been published (barring Shafer and Pitt - not underweight). Heaviest teams: 389lbs Ingram/Herendeen and Marshack/Marshack, lightest team 280lbs Palmer/Agnese carrying 11+28.

Race 1 'A' Fleet 05/24/10

The first 5 teams stay in the A fleet. The bottom 5 teams will go into the B fleet and go back out onto the water.

Actual Start Time: 11.55
Conditions – Blowing between 11 and 14 Knots, lumpy
Windward Mark – Easton, Schafer, Melvin, Glaser, Casey, Tomko, Marshack, Ingram, Hoog, Gillespie
Roundings at the bottom: Easton, Melvin, Schafer, Glaser, Tomko, Casey, Marshack, Ingram, Gillespie, Hoog
Windward Mark: Easton, Melvin, Schafer, Tomko, Glaser, Casey, Ingram, Marshack, Gillespie, Hoog
Sailor in the water at the top turned out to be the defending champion John Casey. Unfortunately that made them slip from 6th to 9th place. As he says though –'the day's not over yet!'

Finish time: Approx 12.25

Finishing order:
Position Skipper Name Notes

1 Easton
2 Melvin
3 Schafer
4 Tomko
5 Glaser
6 Marshack
7 Ingram
8 Gillespie
9 Casey
10 Hoog

Protests – Gillespie seeking re-dress – updates to follow.

Other:

Tartaglino will not get re-dress for a bungee breaking that was holding the tack line. A picture of the judges deliberating.

Easton team looked very strong out front – see picture of Mike Easton and crew Tripp Burd

They got six races off today. Conditions have been great, the "new boat" bugs have been mostly shaken out, and Taylor Reiss/Mathew Whitehead pulled a bullet in the last race.

How about the showing of Taylor Reiss & Mathew Whitehead? Isn't that kid 15. Unbelievable skills at that age to go up against the best.
