Australia will be sending it's strongest team ever to the Worlds in Italy next month. It includes the current top three rated A sailors as well as an impressive group with outstanding achievements. I was keen to go myself, and very disappointed to miss the cut by one for the allocated places - that was until I reflected on the credentials of those going. The Australian A website has this notice.

"Australia's strongest team for the World Championships in Italy

In 2010 Australia will send it’s strongest ever team of 12 competitors to the International A-Division World Championships to be held in Cesenatico, Italy from 26th June to 3rd July. Australians have dominated the class since the inception of World Championships in 1980 winning 17 of the 23 championships held and placing in the top 3 of all.

The team boasts 2 Silver & 2 Bronze Tornado Olympic medalists and multiple World champions in a number of catamaran classes, not only in A-Division.

As well as 7 of the sailors being placed in the top 10 at the recent Australian championships, Glenn Ashby, Steve Brewin and Andrew Landenburg will be defending their 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the last World Championships held in Belmont, Lake MacQuarie, Australia in 2009.

The team comprises of :- Glenn Ashby – 6 times World A-Cat Champion, 5 times European A-Cat Champion, 7 times A-Cat Australian Champion, 3 times Tornado World Champion, 3 times F18 World champion, 1 ISAF World championship and Silver Medalist 2008 Olympics.

Steve Brewin – World A-Cat Champion 2001, European A-Cat Champion 2008, World Nacra 5.8 Champion 2000 and 2002,2008,2010 Australian A-Cat Champion.

Chris Cairns – Bronze Medalist 1984 Olympics. Little America’s Cup Winner 1985, 1983, 1984 Tornado World Champion , 1983, 1987 Tornado European Champion

James Spithall –World Match Race Champion 2005, World Melges 24 Champion 2005, Multiple America’s Cups and Skipper of BMW Oracle, fastest multihull match racer

Brad Collett – 2001 Australian Champion, Second in 2010 Australian Championships

On behalf of all members I would like to wish the team all the best in their endeavours to secure another strong result.

Hopefully plenty of US sailors will be going as well to test their skills against the best. The turnout from Europe will be massive as well.
I understand the US will be putting a proposal to hold a Worlds in 2013. Questions are already being asked why this should be done when US sailors don't support the Worlds to any great degree when it is outside their waters. Come on guys - lift your game!

Cheers

ACE11,

In regards to your last comment that is critical of US participation at A-Class WC's, note there will be three US sailors competing at this event:

Randy Smyth
Ben Hall
Ben Moon

Moonie will be sailing with an AUS nummber but we consider him one of our own. He is a member and district chairman of our class.

We will be submitting a proposal to host the WC in 2012 and the venue we are proposing is once again Islamorada, FL. We had 99 boats attend the last WC in Islamorada. 60% of the entrants were from North America and the rest were from around the world.

Before you criticize the US, I think I should remind you that Australia has the same problem when they host a WC in getting international sailors to come. The last WC in Australia had 69 boats and I blame more the current class qualification system for preventing you from getting 100 boats on the starting line.

I'll also remind you that it is a lot easier for a European sailor to travel to a WC on the continent than to come to either the US or Australia when either of us host the WC. I can see why European sailors would prefer to sit out a WC in the US/Aus and sail an equally competitive EC in the same year.

The US class has tripled in size in the last 10 years. If we continue to grow, I think you will see more sailors wanting to go to international WC venues.

Let's not throw darts at each other. We all want to grow this class. Good luck to your sailors at this event.

Bob Hodges
USACA Class President

Hi Bob

I meant no offense in my comments - just a light hearted dig. It's good you've got some quality people attending this year. I might argue about Ben's bona fides though - he PM'd me that he grew up in the Noosa area and sailed dinghies at Lake Cootharaba - my home club and venue of the 1994 Worlds.
I'll be trying my best to qualify for the AUS team to go to Florida but would have been just as happy to go to California as I have rellies there.
The growth in your fleet has been spectacular over the last 10 years and a real credit to those involved. I know how hard it is, having been the driver of A Class sailing in Queensland over about the last 25 years. In the late 80's we once had 7 boats for our State Titles and this year we had 36 - very pleasing.
I'm not sure which Worlds in AUS you are talking about. I sailed in the last one at Belmont where we had 94 boats. http://www.a-cat.org.au/PDFs4download/A%20Class%20Worlds%20Overall%20Results.pdf
Several more nominated but couldn't attend at the last minute so the 100 quota was filled. There were 59 locals, 3 Kiwis, 3 South Americans and 29 Euros - about the same percentages as your event for local and OS attendees. Australians traditionally travel a lot to sailing events and our Olympic selection criteria even demand particpation and results in a certain number of OS events. Probably not so much of an issue in cat classes any more!
I think we've outgrown the 100 boat limit as a class at Worlds. There is provision in the rules for Gold and Silver fleets. There may be some discussion at the meeting this year and I've asked Storm Johnson, our President, to support such a move.
Anyway, good luck with fleet building and hope to be there in 2012.

Cheers

Spithall is out - he has an appointment with Obama during the event. Something about thanking him for helping the US win the AC.
Johnson has been promoted from Trolly Dolly. Watch this bloke go downwind in light air!

Looks like the A-Class Worlds is a fight between Ashby and Brewin.

Yes it's interesting how champions always rise to the top. Some were writing Glenn off after his 4th place in this years AUS nationals. Another point of interest is that Stevie can be right up there and remain essentially a weekend sailor. He still gets up at 5 in the morning and trudges off to his job as a house builder! Hope to see a bit more wind for them after the drifting conditions in the first three races.
And they'll be going head to head next week in the F18 Worlds.

Cheers
