Ken or Andrew what is the water looking like down there. We are looking at plans to come back down there but worried about reports of tar balls on horn.
Anyone think BP will pay us for lost sailing time?

Thanks

I just talked to Andrew, and he asked me to report that Horn Island Hop is on! As of now, the island is open. The only reports of tar balls have been toward the east end, whereas the HIH takes us to the west end (nearly 20 miles away if I recall correctly). In case things change, they are working on alternate course plans, but as of now it's a go as usual. Expect further info from the Ocean Springs YC bunch very soon! Me...I'm off to register....

Yep we plan on holding HIH in the traditional format, sail to Horn Island on Saturday and sail around Deer Island on Sunday. Me or Ken or both will make a trip out to horn Island this weekend to find a good spot for the finishline an make sure everything is ok. Like I said in my post for slip to ship we will not ask anyone to sail in water with an oil sheen on it and as of right now there is no surface oil in our area just a few small tar balls washing ashore and only on the south shore of Horn Island toward the east end. Anyone that was here for slip to ship can tell u how clean and clear the water was out there.
Here is a link to a video that one of the sailors made of the ship island race http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuhfStrq0o8
Hope to see everyone there.

Horn Island hop has been cancelled. There are reports of oil on the island and oil in the sound.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I was out with a crew laying boom along the shore of Horn island back in May and had a real lump in my throat thinking about the potential for this happening. At that time the island and the sound were pristine and there was a sense of unreality about what we were up to.

I'm so looking forward to this well being capped and recovery process starting.

Chris.
