A week and a half ago, I tore the mast in half on my N6.0 Orig.
Thw windward diamond wire snapped like it was cut with a cable cutter. All strands within 1/8 inch of each other. The following paragraphs are taken from an email conversation between me and a formerly potential buyer.(I think the boat is worth wwwaaaayyyy more than he does.)

You know what, I am torn between getting a NA mast and a Orig/Euro mast, I think that the Euro mast will handle the sq top and kite, and the brand new main is set up for single diamond also. I am leaning toward euro. With a NA I would
have to replace all of the brand new rigging that I just put on.
(Will you pick the mast up at performance, or have it shipped?)

As far as driving out to pick it up, haven’t gotten that far yet. It might be a good opportunity to go sailing if I drive out and pick it up though. Insurance paid enough to put on an NA mast. I may do that. I have a high aspect sq top main, and I think that mabe the reduced sail area dosnt warrant it though. I believe that it’s the only beachcat with double diamonds, basically due to grande sail area. I think the demasting was sort of a fluke, The windward diamond wire broke right in the middle, like it was cut in half. Not at the tang. Go figure. I had been in pretty good blows before and purposely looked up to see how the mast was doing, never saw it bend much. I had a 5.7 that the top of the mast would fall off three feet and its still going strong with its new owner in cali.(2 crew and skipper, over 700 lbs.Sq top.)To tell you the truith, I wasn’t completely powered up when it went. And was under main and jib only, no spin.
did the border Run the last 2 yrs. Am still figuring out the waves Think I may do it again next year. Came in 2nd 2 years ago, and 5th in cats, 5th in multihull overall this year. An inter20 beat us like red headed step children this year. Tiger did the same last year. If you want me to post all of my lame excuses for this year's race, I can do that too.

How about some thoughts on the difference between orig/euro vs NA masts.

Comments on mast choice, and handling waves going down wind would be appreciated. Please, no comments on penmanship.

They evolved to the double diamonds for a reason. If you're replacing the mast, go with the stronger one...specially if you're running a kite on it. Contact Rick Bliss at New England Catamarans for tuning info.

Everytime I sailed my N6.0na, it seemed that the leeward diamonds were under more tension when the main was powered up, not the windward ones. OH well, the mast failed.

To be technically correct ....

The diamond wire failed ....

The mast extrusion was just "collateral damage" ....

As a observation .... I think somewhere around +50% of replacement masts are damaged in shipment .... my favorite story is the one that was literally cut/sawed in half by the shipping/frieght company ...

If I lived in Arizona and the replacement mast was in S.California .... I'ld be planning a roadtrip ....

Totally agree w/ "TeamChums" .... Talk to Rch Bliss before you make a decision !!!!
