Looking at the jib design on the older boats, 6.0, 5.8,5.5 etc.... and on the new boats with self tackers I20, F-18, Infusion, Wildcat etc..... Are the new boats giving up a little sail performance on the older boats with the overlapping jib or is the newer sail plan more efficient with getting flow on the backside of the main?

B mark is gone, you don't need one anymore dumbass. 'Course you wouldn't know that since you don't race anymore.

Check out the 2010 America's Cup. BMW creamed the competition which basically used old school technology. (more sail area) BMW was using a newly designed movable (high aspect ratio) wing. When it comes to technology, old school rarely trumps what's new.

Challenger USA wins the America's Cup Match 2-0!

Sometimes the Alter Cup Qualifier will use a " B " Mark if there is a mixed bag of boats to help even things up a bit.

Depends on the type of sailing. Distance races where there is a lot of reaching the overlap may be an advantage. Fun sailing with lots of straight line sailing a large overlapping jib is very nice when compared to rigging and running a spin.

Many years ago near the end of the Mug race, I was caught from behind and passed by a Nacra 6.0. I was on my I20, too high a reach for the spinny, he walked by us to leeward.

So, if there is a reaching leg that is too high for the spin, yes, those big old jibs will be faster than the little blade jibs all the spin boats run. But without a B mark, no.

When the 6.0NA gets a chance to crack off a little from close hauled and let that jib breath, it will fly.

I had to bust John's chops a little. My H21se had a HUGE jib and when you cracked it off a little, it was like the turbo charger kicked in. The overlapping jib does make a difference when beam reaching....till it's time to de power.
