OK we are trying to find out what people do to help reduce the smell in the gear and sailing clothes that seems to develop after sailing in salt water. We usually get home and soak the gear in fresh water and soap. This helps some but not completly. I had the idea of putting the gear in the pool but thought the chemicals might hurt the material. So what do you guys do to help.

Throw mine in the pool ... sometimes rinse my sails there too.

I wash all my stuff with dishwashing soap in a bucket as I'm washing the boat when I come back from a salt water regatta, then I leave it on the tramp in the sun to dry. I'll put my spray top and other 'clothes' in the washing machine and dryer but gloves, booties, harness and life jacket stay on the tramp with the bucket of soap.

There is a product sold in dive shops that supposedly eliminates the smell. David Strickland swears by the stuff...but me? I follow the Ding line of reasoning..."what smell?". It's just going to get stinky again and I'm not out there for a beauty contest (thankfully).

yes gear gets funky!

i thought i had a dead animal in my house a few months ago.. ends up it was just a shirt i had sailed with, that somehow got in the back of a closet...

I have thrown gear and sails in the pool as well.. helps for a little bit..

Smell? I like to think of it as a "scent"... wink

There is a product called Piss-Off! for cleaning wetsuits, you could also just throw it in the washing machine.

I've been told that my sailing gear smells like a bed of roses.

I don't see what the problem is :P

Bailey might disagree.

Most of my stuff has a little bit of a funk, but I've got a pair of Gill gloves that are just plain horrible. Through em' in the wash, they still come out reeking. I think its time to call in an exorcist.

Get a bottle of rum and a can of gasoline, pour a cirle of gasoline around the gloves, splash them with rum, light them and the circle on fire, drink the rest of the rum while dancing around the circle naked chanting "RedRum, RedRum...".

When the fire goes out, if there is anything left of the gloves, they won't stink! And if they do, well, they are truly evil!

And then you should change your sail number to...666!

Sail more and sail harder harder. Wear them out before they start to smell.

Rinse after sailing, wash with whatever soap, dry inside, not in sun (eats the gear). Been sailing in Salt my whole life, as long as you rinse and dry and occasionally clean by hand, no smell. The key is washing immediately.
