I'm going to be spending a week in Ventura, CA on vacation later this month and I was wondering if anyone has sailed there.
Beach? Harbor? any info is much appreciated.

I sail my P-18 out of Ventura (as well as MDR).
The launch ramp is multi-lane and generally not too crowded that you have to wait. One downside to the ramp is that it sits perpendicular to the wind so that when you rig on the lee side, you'll need to let the boat rotate to easily put up the main. Also makes it a bit harder to dock when you are finished for the day.

The tack to the ocean is pretty short. There is a beach just inside the harbormouth where you can land or hang out if need be.

The wind and water inside can be easy and as soon as you hit the entrance...wham! Afternoon breezes can easily reach 15-20, although when I sailed there a week ago, it was 8-12.
The chop is often short and steep; you can almost capsize even sitting on the windward hull. Makes for a great adventure.

A turn up the coast will take you towards Surfer's Point where there are kite sailors.

The amount of boat traffic, particularly during the week, is somewhat lighter so be sure you are fairly well self-contained.

Overall, can be good winds and some fun times. Bark back at the seals on the buoy just offshore!

Post back when you think you will be sailing there; perhaps we can look out for you.

At Channel Islands Harbor there is a short stretch of beach just seaward of the Coast Guard station. (You do have to drive over the curb.) A couple of tacks and you are out into the big blue. Sea conditions generally similar to Ventura, generally great sailing but keep your wits about you.

If you're here on the 19th, why don't you come out for the annual Milt Ingram 'Round Anacapa race? There's a beach cat class and we usually get 5-10 boats. It's a blast. Email JOFOHO@aol.com for details and registration.

Mike.
