Foiling F16s, when do we see them? #218691

Referencing the thread in the main forum, I am asking the question of when will we see someone try this on an F16? I would try myself, but don’t have a F16 currently and concentrating on the Moth and the upcoming worlds in Jan that I don’t have an inclination to run a 2-boat program at present. Especially when the moth is quicker than the current F16s (being cheeky here!)

The F16 rules are such:
1.6.4 (Added by vote, August 2007) For the avoidance of doubt, daggerboards/centerboards will conform to the following :
a) Curved/’Banana’ boards will not be allowed.
b) Assymetrical cross-section profile boards will be allowed.
c) Fore/aft movement of the boards when in the down position will not be allowed.
d) End fences/horizontal appendages below the waterline will not be allowed. The board shall be capable of removal, without tools, via the upper opening of the case.
e) There will be no limitation on the daggerboard/centerboard length

The current rules won’t allow the end fence that the White Dragon boat has, but everything else is possible. In this circumstance daggerboards don’t have cases, so that part of the rules is nullified as they sit outside the case. The beam width refers to hulls only, so the wing tips of the rudder foils can be outside of the 2.5m dimension.

So it is actually quite possible to put an F16 on foils. Thoughts?

I thought the C cat guys have already proven that foils were not as fast, around a windward-leeward type course? I thought those wings looked nice, until I saw what happens when you fall on it!

I believe there is a rule on how much inward cant you can have on the daggerboards. The F16 ruleset seems to limit the amount of experimentation you can do on foiling.

Makes sense with the stated goal of limited development. As such, no foiling on class legal F16s at this point.

Rule number? Because if there is such rule, I can't find it. I thought the same, that the width of the platform should be the same with daggerboard up and down, but I can't find this in the rules...

So, in theory, nothing prevents you from having a "daggerboard" fitted side to side on a hull rather than up and down... But I'm sure it would be against the "spirit of the rules" smile

[Note, the link you point to is for an obsolete set of rules, the official rules, v 2.0, are in the "official documents" forum. However there is no difference between the two documents for that particular rule.]

Thanks, I always forgot to look in the definitions! 6 degrees is not enough to foil on, unless you make the daggerboards stupidly long smile

As you said, case closed, as long as you want to stay class legal.

My bad. I would have thought that 6 degrees of cant is a major factor in the boat it would have been included in the summary that I copied/pasted.

No worries, design your boards to deflect 20 degrees when they get a 90kg tip load. Instant curved boards without breaking the rules. That will test your friendly neighborhood composites engineer.

We are working from several iterations of the rule set since the original set developed by Wouter, Kirt and Phill. They (the rules) desperately need a full rewrite to clarify some points and put several others into a logical order. Reference in the rules to other classes such as F18 are irrelevant to rules and the 'official' website and email address are wrong.
