I have been presented with an opportunity to pick up a Hobie 20 that has been unused and sitting in a field for the past 5 years for a fire sale bargain basement price. Going into this I am looking to replace all the standing/running rigging, new tramp and a few other odds and ends to the tune of about $1200 to get the boat back on the water.

Are there any problem areas with this boat I need to be cognoscente about regarding the tip of the mast, problem areas with the hulls, or the rudder/helm assembly?

I have absolutely no experience with the Hobie brand with the exception of sailing on a few in the past.

Thanks

EC

Replacing the rigging is a good idea ....

..."then sail it like you stole it....."

Enjoy

PS: Does it have "beach wheels" w/ it????

Yes, it is a total package boat, trailer, storage box, beach wheels and a bunch of other stuff (tools, harnesses, wetsuits, extra parts) etc.... The boat was used frequently when it was used, but hasn't been touched in a long time. The people are moving (downsizing) and need to get the boat out of there hence the real cheap price.

My problem is I don't want to pick something up that is going to cost me a fortune when it is all said and done. Right now with the purchase price, the new rigging and trampoline, and other stuff I'll be looking at $2500 - $3000 to get the boat back on the water.

What year is the boat? There were some design issues with the very first ones (like the first handful), other than that, they're very solid and reliable. Matt Miller would be a good resource for these details.

I could definitely live with that price, especially with all of those items included. It could be hard to find a H16 for that price, with all that stuff.

Buy it and go to Iowa!!!

Nah, not a good buy. Leave it alone... where did you say it was again? Exactly? Hmmmmm

Had a H20 for several years, still kinda regret selling it as my son is big enough to make excellent crew. My thought always was "sail what you have as good as you can" you'll have no regrets.

good luck
