I don't see anything unusual in this scenerio.
Room is defined as:
The space a boat needs in the existing conditions while manoeuvring promptly in a seamanlike way.
This definition already takes the type of boat into account, as well as the wind and water conditions. If the tacking boat manoeuvers promptly and seamanly, then a boat changing course allow her to keep clear.
That is, the "room" needed by an AC72 catamaran to tack will be greater than what a laser needs.
