Take a look at the Sailing Anarchy front page, Greg Homan had his M20 and trailer stolen in Lelystad. So keep your eyes peeled.

I drove through Lelystad yesterday actually (30mins from my home).
What would you do with a boat like that? Impossible to sell right?

They probably nicked it for the trailer and threw the boat on some dump somewhere.

go figure !

The boat was designed for a singlehanded transatlantic crossing which is probably impossible to insure.
But I dont see any reason why a simple €500/y beachcat insurance wouldnt cover this.

I feel really sorry for the guy though, he went through a lot of trouble to get that project of the ground.

I do.

How many cat sailors are required to pay 500 bucks just to cover the insureance on that particular boat in case of theft ?

There are just 3000 to 4000 insured cat sailors in NL and that pool is too small to pay out large sums and still see the companies turn-over a healthy profit. Most of these sailors just have WA insureance (damage to other people and property) and only pay something like 200 bucks a year. Insuring is not really about us but rather about the companies earning money on you. They will do almost anything to not pay out. Have you read your terms, we have to hook our boats to a thick chain when parked. Simple hitchlocks for your trailer are not enough either you have to have one of those rare and fully tested and guaranteed versies.

Remember a few years back when so man people distroyed their boats at the round Texel. The companies where looking at several years payback to break even again.

Yo Wouter,
I didnt pluck the €500 figure out of thin air.
The insurance company I use would ask €486,52 to insure this boat for theft and damages, etc anywhere in europe (WA+Casco basis).
(Assuming a day-value of €25K, trailer value of €5000, and own risk of €1000).

That is not too bad right?
Dont take my word for it, calculate it yourself:

This bring up a question: Is the insurance company responsable if you decide to go sailing in conditions that there is a good possibility that you could destroy the boat?
At what point should you share some of the responsibility?

In my insurance it says I'm not insured when over 28 knots of wind.

Would be good if you could post a describtion of the trailer and the boat. Everybody should put a flyer about the stolen boat in his club. Maybe the boat will be sighted somewhere.

I am surprised that boat insurance companies are so different in different countries. My boat got damaged in a storm while stored. They never asked me if I lashed the boat to the ground. Just checked the damage and paid for full (insured) loss although I could repair the boat. And I have no paragraph about wind strength in my contract. How should they know about wind strngth?

Tony, I think you misunderstood my first sentence. I asked how many paying persons it takes for the company to break even when a few boats are stolen each year. Fact is, cat insureance is not big business for them. I had a friend whose F18 was stolen a few years back and the company wouldn't cover it because there was some small print stating he couldn't park his trailer on a publically accessible road. He lives in a flat so that pretty much nullified his coverage in that area completely.

I pay just over €300 for the entire package. And they paid already a new mast some years ago. However, there is a private contribution of €500 if the damage occurs on a regatta.
I too don't have a wind-limit in my contract, like Klaus. First, it's unrealistic - what if the wind increases while you're on the water and you're unable to return immediately (long distance race)? Second, we all know that strong winds on the water usually don't damage the boat - the trouble starts when you're at the beach again.

Insurance companies do not depend just on the small boat policies for profit. If I insure my house, the contents and my cars with them, I expect them to also cover my boat at a fair price.

Insurance also does not depend soley on premiums to make money. They typically invest money for profit as well.

YuuZoo’s Rolex Sydney Hobart woes
After losing two men overboard within five hours of the Rolex Sydney Hobart start yesterday afternoon, YuuZoo skipper Ludde Ingvall didn’t think things could get much worse.

But just hours later, with the two crew safe and warm onboard, his race south looked almost over.

Around 2.00am this morning more than 10,000 litres of water was fast filling his 90-footer, threatening to short-circuit the engine and cut power to the electronics.

Watch systems were thrown into chaos as a crew of four was left on deck to handle the maxi as the remaining 16 attempted to stop Bass Strait gushing though a hole left by a missing speed log.

YuuZoo’s 14 knot pace was halved as she lost her grip on the front runners Wild Oats XI, Wild Thing and Investec Loyal.

Worse still, Ingvall’s misfortune continued when not just one of his electrical water pumps broke, but the second went kaput too.

A “chain-gang” of crew armed with buckets and hand-pumps were put to work in the hot and confined space, brewing several seasick bellies.

“Water was lapping over the bulkhead and working its way through the whole bow-section…for a while I thought we had some serious breakage,’’ he said.

Young Lisa Chamberlain, contesting her first Rolex Sydney Hobart, was the one who found where the water was gushing in.

With the log back in place and water almost bailed, an exhausted Ingvall said “I couldn’t see things getting much worse” as he approached galeforce winds in Bass Strait just before midday today.

“It’s a lot more fun to race when the weather is good and you can actually focus on racing rather than survival,’’ he admitted late this afternoon.

Ingvall said he had never experienced a race where so much had gone so wrong in such little time.

His problems started at 5.30pm yesterday afternoon as the crew prepared for the first southerly front by reducing sail area.

A gust caught them unaware and as a quick thinking Ingvall threw the helm in a bid to take the power from the huge sail, Greg Homan and Will Mueller were thrown into the water.

“The two guys were basically hanging on to the sail as it was taken away from the boat, as it was flapping they both landed in the water,’’ said Ingvall.

“We had multiple issues, we had a sail that was half way down and was stuck and we had to get them down and we had two guys we had to keep an eye on in the water.’’

Fortunately an expert man overboard drill saw the two brought back aboard within ten to 15 minutes.

“Fortunately everyone did what they were supposed to,” said Ingvall.

This afternoon YuuZoo is back at almost peak pace, maintaining 11 knots of boat speed as she heads into Bass Strait in seventh position in the fleet.
