'Burner sets new record on the Santa Barbara to King Harbor race
Aug 1, 2003
Friday, August 1, 2003 morning brought scattered clouds to Santa Barbara, California with a 900 foot ceiling and 1500 cloud depth. By 7:30AM the wind had filled in with a light southerly at about 3-4 knots. The burn off of the marine layer was happening pretty quickly and it was a pretty safe bet the wind would go west early and be in the 14-19 knot range by mid afternoon. We left the dock on AFTERBURNER at 10:25AM with a 1200 hrs start scheduled on the West side of the committee boat. We motored out the main channel and checked in with the Santa Barbara yacht club race committee. (Many thanks to SBYC for being organized and on station early.) The new Victoria 5 with her canting ballast keel as already out and checking the wind by the time we raised our mainsail and settled in for the start.
