Is there any cat racing in Indy?

Mast up Cat racing?

I found two Lakes / Reservoirs this am...Eagle Creek and Geist, both appear to have clubs on them…

Yes, there is cat racing in Indy, and most of the time it's mast up. blush If you mean mast up storage, both reservoirs have sailing clubs, and Eagle Creek has a city-owned Hobie Beach, which offer it.

Eagle Creek Sailing Club has a more active cat racing schedule. See the thread titled "Wave Ntl Series Regattas" for part of the schedule. Not sure if the weekly racing at ECSC includes cat starts. I don't think the Hobie Beach group races anymore, but they used to.

I sail on Geist at the Indianapolis Sailing Club, but I'm about the only cat sailor there who races any more. We do have a Portsmouth fleet start in our weekly races (after the 7 one-design fleets), but often I'm the only D-PN participant, so usually I'm racing against myself. But we do have several recreational cat sailors, and I am ISC's Portsmouth Fleet Captain again this year.

There's another lake north of town, Morse Reservoir, where Skip Kaub races Waves with his buds and neighbors almost weekly. Most keep their boats at their homes or Skip's place, but they'll come down to Eagle Creek for the regattas.

Are you coming to Indy?

I live close to the Geist Reservoir, and I've been a member of ISC for a long time; but I'll have to admit, Eagle Creek Reservoir is a better sailing lake for cats.

There are no big power boats, and the sailable part of the lake is more open and oval. The drawbacks are that the sailing club is at the end of a long tributary on the west side, which is tough to sail in and out of, and a pain to drive to by car. I don't know how you get a space on the city's Hobie Beach, but it is on the east side of the lake and much more convenient by water or car. There's a nearby dealership called Sailboats, Inc. which could give you more details, if you're interested.

Geist Reservoir is more challenging to sail on; S-shaped with a few islands. The Indianapolis Sailing Club is an older club, with one of the best facilities in the country and an active social schedule. It's a popular location for regional and national regattas, even for classes we don't have in the club. We have our own little Hobie Beach, but we're working on expanding it.

Morse is a smaller, skinnier lake; the only good sailing area is right off Skip's point, near the dam. On anything bigger than a Wave, you'll run out of lake pretty quickly. I don't think there's any public launch area near the dam.

If you're thinking of moving here, there are good residential areas all over town. If you're way down on the south side, you can drive down to Monroe Reservoir near Bloomington just about as easily, and it's a MUCH bigger lake. Bill404 sails his Hobie 21 there, with plenty of room and launch sites.

Well I wish I could say the sailing was better here, but I'm sure it's better on the east coast. But other than that, Indy is a great place to live. I moved here in '87 and have always felt right at home. Lots of sports (GO Butler Bulldogs!), famous auto racing, low cost of living, good schools, clean air, fair amount of culture, etc, etc...

Some folks may still call it "Nap-town" or "India-No-Place", but those days are long gone. It's a pretty happening city. We're hosting the Super Bowl next year, if there is one.

I won't try to talk you into moving your family; but if you HAVE to move, this is a pretty good place to move to.

You best check with the right family!

Rented a cat at Eagle Creek in a previous life. Used to make the yearly pilgrimage in May for a number of years. You'll miss us when you're gone, so we'll stay at your place for Indy!
