My phone only does phone calls but for those of you who are with the times, you will like this news:

From the "Scuttlebutt" e-newsletter today:

BUT CAN IT MIX DRINKS?
While there is yet to be an app that can mix a good margarita,
theAppWhisperer.com has created a top 10 guide for iPhone and iPad sailing
apps. The one app that got our attention was the Sailboat Race Starter. The
SRS is an ISAF Countdown Timer for racing sailboats that includes:

- A sync feature which allows you to sync your time with the race committee
if you miss the warning signal.

- Audible alerts and vibration as timer approaches race start.

- A feature to mark both ends of the start line using GPS technology, with
the app providing information on how far away from the line you are, and
how long it will take to get there.

We are not sure how well it works for start line support, but when the
closest alternative may be the Velocitek ProStart ($599), the nominal app
fee could be worth trying. Has anybody test-driven the SRS?

Here is the full list of apps on the top 10 guide:

Once again Android gets left out.

Its not like I'll be taking my Droid X out on the start on the 20, but there are tons of sailing apps in the Android Market as well.

Also, relating an iPhone to a "cool phone" is a bit of a stretch.

Ha! iPhone's are soooooo 2006

Not a snowballs chance in hell of me taking my phone on the boat with me. My first born child would be fortunate if it is as loved or protected as my EVO.

I'm boatless.

toss it in a waterproof phone bag from your local chandelry (the online one :)) that comes with the heavy lanyard and you're cool (the bag helps it float).

Only problem I've had (with the droid version) is that trying to see the screen through polarized glasses in overhead sunlight through the bag can be kind of tough (mental note: turn up display brighness)

i have kept both my iphones in a drysak for the past 4 years or so without any problems at all. I use the $5 gps MotionX app to track my day and the $0.99 Speed app for on the fly speed readings. I hang it from my boom usually

Took my Droid2 on the water with me over the weekend at the DI Race. My D1 went Round the Island.

I bought a cool app called, Navionics Marine. I got the entire US Central set of marine charts for like $15. I was contemplating upgrading my Bluecharts, but at $75/zone, I don't need them enough to spend that much. Garmin is including the FULL US Blue Chart set with some of their new handhelds. I'll probably upgrade my maps that way; i.e. whole new unit.

I did just find a similar app in the android market calld BC Racer. $4, downloading now.... will play with it.

I downloaded Sailboat Race Starter for iPhone and already used it in three races. WOW! Couldn't believe it does all that for the price. Much cheaper than my dedicated LED timer which doesn't even have GPS.

This was in Thursday's "Scuttlebutt":

* From Joanne Carter, Editorial Director, TheAppWhisperer.com:
Many thanks for posting about the iPhone/iPad sailing app list in
Scuttlebutt 3334. I've had a look at some of the comments and there look to
be quite a few Android users there, upset that they weren't included. So...
I have compiled a top 10 Android sailing app list, just for them - would
you be so kind as to mention this too, please? Here's the link:
