We espect 12 - 15 Catamarans, maybe more, all sizes and shapes (16 - 22 feet with crew of two). (There is one RC reviewed and allowed exception to this rule: One A-Cat member will single hand the race because he has demonstrted the knowledge and experience, and has accomplished this trip before.) Racing is this weekend, May 21 and 22 from the Islander Resort, FL Keys. There will be Family fun in Marathon. Hamburgers and hotdogs plus more at the park in Marathon's Sombrero Beach, Food for families and crews, and play as you wish in the super beach and park. We will research park rules on allowed alcohol to be provide by you. When we move to the Boatmans hotel after racing and food, there is a bar and expected music. Boatman’s Sombrero Resort Tel: 305-289-7662 still has a few rooms avalable for Satuday night , the regatta rate is $109 for a suite which can sleep up to 5.
Registration begins at 6pm on the pool deck at the Islander Resort. MM82.1 The Florida Keys. with happy hour snacks available.

Notice of Race (NOR) Islander Reef Run, May 21st & 22nd , 2011 The Organizing Authority and Host is Islander Water Sports, under the auspices of Tybee Island Sailing Association at the Islander Resort, mm82.1, Islamorada, Florida. Sponsors include: The Islander Resort, Calvert Sails, , Islander Water Sports and Tybee Island Sailing Association This will be a two (2) day race with options, starting in the water off of the Islander Resort, and racing to Sombrero Beach area in Marathon, then continuing the next day to Smather’s Beach, Key West. Total of 80 miles for those so registered. Options will include a one day, one leg, for those who so register, finishing at Sombrero Beach, Marathon. They may also stay the night and sail back to the Islander the next day, etc. (Discussions underway as to how and whether to count the return leg, if wanted by competitors.) Race legs are: 32 miles from Islander Resort to Marathon, Sombrero Beach, and 48 miles from Marathon to Key West. Hotdogs, hamburgers and more fixings will be included at the end of the first day in the park at Sombrero Beach in Marathon.
Modifications to this NOR. As plans develop, modifications to this NOR may be made and will be published.
Rules: This distance race will be governed by the RRS unless modified by this NOR and or the Sailing Instructions (SI).
Boats will not be limited in advertising, except by good taste as determined by the RC. Eligibility and Entry: All Beach type Catamarans with crew of two (2) from 16 to 22 feet are eligible. Registration will be by completing the entry form and paying the entry fee of $65, $40 for those finishing in Marathon ( and/or returning to Islamorada). There are required on board safety equipment (List included herein), which will be inspected prior to racing. Omissions shall not be permitted. Formal registrations and fees are not required until registration which will take place at the Islander Resort on the pool deck Friday, May 21st , 2011 after 6PM and Saturday morning until 9:00AM. Early online filing of intent to register will determine if classes will be formed. Email intent to race to wgreen53@cfl.rr.com . SI & sketches will be returned to those so registering. Comments on this race are welcome to this email address.

(May be race end, for those who wish, times will be recorded for award purposes) May 22nd 2nd Day First Signal, 9:55AM Beach Start, Sombrero Beach, Marathon may 22nd Finish, Race end In the water finish, outside Smather’s Beach, Key West May 22nd Awards, Salsa Loca Restaurant, Key West; Off Duval, behind Cowboy Bills, corner of Angela and Duval streets, Phone # 305 292 1865, web: salsalocakeywest.com , excellent Mexican and fun place. Not required to be present to win an award, will be mailed to winners if not present.
Course: The course will be as selected by each crew to sail from the starting line to the finish lines. Both start and finish lines will be described and sketches provided in the SI. Measurements and Safety equipment: No measurements are planned, and will not be made unless there is a challenge from another competitor. In the event of a challenge, the challenging skipper must provide official documented measurement requirements to the RC for completion of the measurements. Required Safety equipment: (Inspections will be made) 1 CG approved PFD per crew member; 1 throw-able PFD; 1 Cell phone in water proof container; 1 - minimum tow line at least 20 feet; at least 1 portable waterproof GPS; 1 boat compass; at least 1 portable waterproof VHF Radio; Up to date Charts for the areas to be sailed; one whistle per crew member attached to personal worn equipment; one set of personal emergency flares/signals on boat and enough drinkable liquid for the duration of the race. Strongly suggested equipment: 1 personal 406hz registered EPIRB. In addition, as available, Craig Van Eaton craig@cyberspeed.cc may have rentable “Spot” tracking systems. Sailing Instructions (SI): The SI with Start & Finish sketches will be available at registration and sent to those emailing intent to race. Scoring: Portsmouth Numbers will be used to handicap competitors. Low corrected times will determine winners. Ties will be broken IAW RRS. Awards: Ball caps with winning placement will be awarded to each crew member for three places. The overall winner will have his or her name inscribed on the perpetual trophy, displayed at the Islander Resort. Other prizes may be provided. Awards will be presented at the Salsa Loca Restaurant, just off Duval Street, Key West. Appetizers and fun provided. Boats and skippers recorded early as, “ intending to race”, will permit classes to be formed so awards can be ordered by class and provided. You may identify your intent to race via email to: wgreen53@cfl.rr.com . There will be no support boats other than the starting RC boat. No chase boats will be on course. All crews will be required to certify that they are aware of the dangers of ocean sailing and that they are totally capable of righting their own boat and recovering crew, even in the event of break up or sinking. Rule 4 is emphasized: “The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in this race or to continue racing is hers alone.” Insurance: Each participating boat shall be required to present or certify by signature, their ownership of third party liability of $100,000 per event or equivalent.
