Its always fun to pick on Aquacats, but what other slug-boats are out there? What are your nominations for the list of worst catamarans?

I'm not sure that qualifies. If it performs its intended task well, it's a legitimate cat, imo.

Most of you guys would include the Wharrams as slugs, I'd guess, but it just ain't so.

Great Lakes Catamaran

The one with the aluminum rail around the tramp and the itty bitty sail. I think it was made for rentals in parks in the mid west.

I have always wanted race one the performance models. With it's welded aluminum hulls and raw weld on the bow, it would be hell at the start.

Hobie Catsy with the small rig. The big rig is so slow that the kids don't even want to get on it, I can't imagine what it is with the small rig.

Hobie Catsy specs:

* Platform length: 3.2m (10 feet)
* Small rig: 3.75m2
* Large rig: 5 m2
* Weight: 75kgs, as much as a A class, but not the same performance!

We joked about doing an adult race with those one day it's blowing, but I'm afraid the damn thing will just sink smile

IMHO the Dart 18 is a real slugamaran, no spinnaker, single trapeze, etc.
Downwind they sit at the frontbeam, sailing dead downwind, waiting till they round the mark.
Its still very popular though, for some reason.

Yes but have any of you ever beaten one in a handicap race, I wonder why they are so popular in the UK.

Totally disagree about Dart 15s, 18s being poor. They're a brilliant design for an off the beach cat that's basic and trouble free. Same goes for the Topcat and KL/SL ranges. Even the flexy Dart 16 is a good boat at what it was designed for. As a result you get the sportier but essentially similar Topper Topaz 14 and 16 cats which are fantastic trainer/fun catamarans. These boats can not be classed as slugamarns.

The Aquacat is the obvious 'slugamaran' as is a UK built boat thankfully no longer available called a 'Peanut'. 10ft long, 6ft beam, 2 part mast with sleeved mainsail and aluminium tube side stays. A tripod rig like the Blokart. They were truly awful. Built by Zygal boats in the mid 70s, they travelled at the same speed sideways as they did forward, throw in a bit of tide and it made heading for any fixed mark an absolute lottery.
