Had the opportunity to meet and have dinner with Abby who is in town for the Space Shuttle launch. You can read about her reflections, a year since attempting to sail around the world alone at age 16. Really nice person and pretty shy. Her next goal is to try and fly around the world.

will she have a pilot on board to launch and land the plane for her? Fly it up to cruising height set the auto pilot and then tell her to start blogging.

The air, like the sea, is a harsh mistress only more so.

interesting that she would seek to circumnavigate by air. I don't read blogs, but did she indicate any particular reason do embarque on this adventure?

Is she that much of a thrill-seeker (which seems to be in contrast with her shy personality that you mentioned)? Is she wishing to re-create Amelia Airheart's journey or something?

Shouldn't you be out filiming Frank filling up the Fuel Tank or something? wink

Never really got a feeling for her driving force. Sure could blog a lot on auto-pilot, or talk some trash with the mic on. Timbo, is it standard practice to check your mic before talking trash while flying?

What a bunch of A#1 butt jackwagons in the background of that video. Apparently too disconnected from reality or just too stupid to realize the gravity of the situation. Yeah, a plane crashing and sinking is funny stuff. May they die in a fiery limo crash so we can say"Oh, they were trying to show off and now they're well done."

From Latitude 38:

July 6, 2011 – Richardson Bay

It's amazing how a relatively minor accident can gain quite a bit of attention when a video camera happens to catch it. That's what occurred on July 1 when Richard Parasol, 75, and James Whitbread, 60, were scooting around Richardson Bay in a Lake LA-4-200 float plane — some have surmised they were showing off a little for the crowd gathered for the Friday Night Jazz & Blues Concert Series in Sausalito's Gabrielson Park — and caught a boat's wake, resulting in a spectacular nose dive just off Horizons Restaurant. The men weren't injured and a Good Samaritan boater plucked them from the wings of the sinking plane. Within hours, news stations were showing footage caught by Mill Valley resident Leif Christiansen. In fact, we'd be surprised if you missed it, but just in case, we'll buy into the media hype on this amazing video, which you can see below. But the next time you think about doing something stupid, remember that nearly every cellphone out there is also a video camera and you might just become the nation's next unwilling media darling.

How about this one..

PROTEST
July 04, 2011

A bareheaded motorcyclist participating in a ride to protest mandatory helmet laws was killed when he was thrown over the handlebars in Onondaga, New York.

Philip A. Contos, 55, of Parish, New York, was on a ride organized by the Onondaga chapter of American Bikers Aimed Towards Education (ABATE), state police said Sunday.

Contos hit his brakes, began fishtailing and lost control of his 1983 Harley Davidson. He shot over the handlebars, hit his head on the pavement and was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, New York, where he was pronounced dead.

State police say evidence at the scene plus information from the attending medical expert indicated Contos would have survived had he been wearing a helmet as required by state law.

Asked about the apparent irony of Contos' death, the statewide president of ABATE, Thomas Alton, said, "We are riding at an increased risk and accept that. ... This individual was a seasoned rider, not a newbie. He made an adult decision. A full decision to ride in the manner he rode in."

Another New Yorker who has been a motorcyclist for over 50 years, Joseph Costantini, said, "I would never ride without a helmet -- even in a state that says you don't have to. I understand where the protesters are coming from because ultimately it's a matter of choice. For me, I would wear a helmet no matter what. ... Must feel great to ride without a helmet because sometimes it's uncomfortable. ... I'm sure his family isn't going to be happy."

Motorcycle helmet use dropped from 67% in 2009 to 54% in 2010, according to a press release issued by the Governors Highway Safety Association.

"This is another sad and tragic example where we have lost someone due to the lack of wearing a helmet," said Jonathan Adkins, communications director for the association.

According to Alton, a large percentage of motorcycle fatalities are due to inexperience and drivers not seeing motorcyclists when switching lanes or making turns.

ABATE of NY Inc. is organizing a memorial "to honor an individual who rode for freedom and risked his all for freedom," he said. A formal date is still to be determined.

Annual motorcycle deaths have more than doubled since the late 1990s with 5,290 in 2008, based on a report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It wasn't before, but it is now!

I'm in Dubai as I type this. On the flight over here, while talking to a female Russian air traffic controller, I pretended to click my mic. button and said, "What are you wearing?" because she sounded hot. I thought the copilot was going to crap his pants...

Yeah, the South West guy's rant has been generating a lot of talk in the ****, no doubt! And we have been double checking the mics!

I'm sure the family of the decedent will be suing someone for this tragic death. Probably the taxpayers (somehow)....
