Multihull Championship Heads for Gulfport Yacht Club, MS

The 2011 Gulf Yachting Association Multihull Championship will be contested at Gulfport Yacht Club, September 16 - 18. This year we have added the GYA Junior Multihull Award to encourage our GYA junior sailors to prepare for the 2016 games in Brazil in a Formula 16 catamaran design. Yacht clubs are encouraged to send a three boat team in spinnaker cats, non - spinnaker cats, and PHRF multihulls. GYA sailors have claimed medals in the past, and now is the time to prepare for the future.

This five race series will feature the top multihull sailors in the GYA. Make plans now to join us in this US Sailing sanctioned event. Sam V has promised great hospitality and fine prizes. The race track will be top shelf and the talent we have seen in the past will ensure a genuine test of skill.

We are pursuing sponsorship, and maybe a Smyth Catamaran Speeed Seminar on Friday or Saturday morning.

Yacht clubs competing for the Pollak Team Trophy be reminded that a crew list will soon be available and must be submitted prior to the skippers' meeting.

This is a supreme opportunity for sailors preparing for the NACRA Open 20 Championship and the Hobie North Americans to enjoy a great training stage. For the NOR touch on: http://www.freewebs.com/gulfportyachtclub//documents/GYAMultiNOR2011SV.pdf

Special notes:
Sailors need not be GYA members; however, US Sailing membership for skipper and crew is required.

PHRF entries may be replaced by a spin or non - spin entry as long as the entry is not of the same design as another boat on the Team.

FWYC announces Team for 2011

Team Captain, Randy Smyth, has submitted the Team Crew List for the GYA Pollak YC Team Trophy. Randy will be sailing his F 25C, YO!, Brian Lambert will be racing his CFR20, and Bob Curry will be flying his A Cat for FWYC.

Word on the docks at PBYC is that their posse includes Kirk on his NACRA 20 C, Mark on the NACRA Open 20, and Tom Whitehurst on a Hobie 16.

Randy will be hosting a Beach Cat SPEEED Seminar Saturday morning, and Schurr Sails has guaranteed ditty bags for all owners who enter. More sponsors are anticipated, and much drama to be had. - Come share this special regatta with us at Gulfport Yacht Club.

From the NOR, there is a REQUIREMENT of being a USSailing member before you can race this regatta.

Last year, it was NOT a requirement.

That is one of the reasons why I'm NOT racing this regatta.

Viscious rumor has it that this has changed. There were several big names in the same boat as you.

I just looked at the NOR and it's still a requirement.

Well, I've heard otherwise and know several boats that won't go to the start if it still is.

I suspect it may have something to do with regatta liability insurance?

Yeah, insurance.... another national sailing org. used to perpetuate that myth, too.

Here's some info. Note that the requirement for USSail membership is for the ORGANIZATION. If your suggestion were true, then, say, a YC holds a race, and then they could only invite YC members to race, and we all know that doesn't hold true. Actually, you don't even have to be a USSailing organization to buy insurance from Gowrie et al, as our CCC paper club used to buy our insurance from them.

Important Information:
1. Coverage will be bound only upon receipt of your application and payment.
2. The regatta liability policy is written on an annual basis. Coverage will begin upon receipt of your
premium payment and continue for one full year. Policies will automatically renew at expiration.
3. The applying organizationís limit of Regatta Liability protection is $1,000,000.
4. US SAILING membership is required.

Perhaps this is where the rumor was formed....?

Regatta Networks is the only online registration service that is able to check the current US Sailing membership database. So, if you are a paid up member... you get the deal. Every other online service will just take your word that you are a member.... if you choose to lie... you cheat the club out of a few bucks... US Sailing does not get a dime.

So... if the YC wants to support US Sailing they offer a discount or surcharge or whatever you call it and Regatta networks will check out whether you get the discount or not. The rest of the world is on the honor system.

If the YC gets their regatta liability insurance through the deal with US Sailing they are encouraged to offer a discount to members or surcharge to non USSA members... Other companies and other deals with Gowrie don't have this requirement. Its a yacht club decision!

This has nothing to do with the silly requirement of a YC to require and verify that you carry personal liability insurance. (You would be stupid if you did not ... but it is really hard to legislate and enforce against stupid)

For final Results (PHRF pending data correction) click each Race Header Number:
http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_regatta_results.php?regatta_id=4480

In order to support our 2012 and 2016 Olympic Athletes, as well as receive your money back for attending regattas during the year (supporting yacht clubs) - JOIN US Sailing!

Everybody Wins. Ask your local yacht club Flag Officers to consider joining the USSA Member Partner Program and pursue staging a "Golden Anchor Program" for 'Multihull' owners like they have in effect at ABYC thanks to John W. New memberships or renewals for USSA through the Member Partner Program at your club will save you 20% a year in dues, and will entitle your club savings on any items purchased from US Sailing.

The staff and race management team from Gulfport Yacht Club provided more than great sailing conditions on the 'Sound,' but they also went out of their way to make everyone feel right at home. Young and elder sailors enjoyed Jambalaya and Gumbo after racing. The Tiki Bar kitty even approved free Bushwackers for those of age and inclination.

Bob Curry announced some changes in the Portsmouth Comm setup and has the inside story. He is now the Multihull coordinator under Carl, and there is a separate single hull coordinator now. Contact Bob C. for the latest.

I'll have photos and more story available on www.gulfsailing.com by tomorrow - meanwhile, call Mark or Kirk.

Way to Go PBYC!!!

Mark,

They were talking about an NOR requirement that required participants to be US Sailing members to partake in the event.
