The A-Class Catamaran North American Championship will be held off shore at the Islander Resort, Islamorada, Florida October 11 – 16, 2011 (located at mile marker 82.1, Overseas Highway, US-1, Florida Keys). The A-Class catamaran is the highest performing singlehanded catamaran class in the world today, capable of achieving speeds of over 15 knots in breezes of 12 to 18 knots. The 18 foot long A-Class Catamaran is sailed with a crew of one and a single mainsail with a sail area of approximately 150 square feet. The high performance of the boat can be attributed to an empty weight of only 75 Kilograms (approximately 165 lbs), achieved primarily by all carbon fiber construction in not only the platform of the boat, but also the mast and boom. The competitors at this event are world class and will, while participating here, be preparing for the world championship to be held at the same Islamorada location, in October 2012.
This event is sponsored by the United States A-Class Association (USACA). Racing will begin at 12 noon each day from October 11th through October 16th. Three, possibly more races are scheduled each of the five competitive days. The USACA will provide awards for the new North American Champion and others that includes competitors in the top overall positions and Master and Grand Master awards for competitors over 50 and 60 years of age respectively. More than 40 Sailors from many states and Canada have already registered.
Interested media and tourist management officials may submit credentials for one or two positions, as decided solely by the Principal Race Official (PRO) on a race committee boat each day, for pictures and stories. First come, first serve, for those positions each day of racing. The PRO decision is final for those permitted on board any Race Committee boat. Authorized positions will come under the direction of the PRO while aboard, for non-interference with race management. The committee boats will leave the dock at approximately 10:30AM each day, weather permitting. Boats will not wait for no-shows as scheduled. The committee boat will expect to stay water borne for approximately 4-5 hours each day. There will be no arrangements for retrieval to the dock. Contact with your credentials: Warren Green, PRO at [email protected] . Credentials must be received by noon on Monday 10 October, 2011, to be considered for a committee boat position, any days of racing.
