I'm just curious as to who might be heading over to Barmera for their opening day weekend. I'll be there. I'm going to be experimenting with my "mozziecam". I have one of those new fangled Gopro cameras which I have mounted on a peice of 40mm conduit that attaches to the centre beam and comes out and up a little behind the rudder link bar. It seems to have a good field of view when I set it up static. But I dont know if this conduit mounting bar will be rigid enough.

I'd love to sail up there but I made the mistake of repainting the boat in 2 pak and have made a right mess of it blush, it will be a further 3 weeks of sanding and large amounts of cash changing hands prior to any sailing cry. Still, has not been in vain as I have learnt a good lession. As soon as I know what it is I will tell you. confused

You got any ideas on where you are going to get it painted? I am going through that process at the moment and trying to find somewhere to get it sprayed at a reasonable price.

I did my Stingray with International Perfection and found it easy enough to do myself. It's done with a roller and can't be sprayed because the fumes are dangerous. If you use a course wet and dry sand paper the sanding back won't take too long. What went wrong?

Where to start tired. I started with the vision of a quick spray job, as I removed the old paint my imagination started working overtime and I went and bought a 2 pack marine paint ( gotta have the shiney finish wink ). Speaking to the salesman he assured me that it could be used with a roller as there was no way that I was going to spray 2 pack. Cool thought I, I can do this grin. Mixed the primer up and rolled it on with an ordinary house roller ( as instructed ). Bloody hell this stuff was good and thick, 2 coats and ensure that you let it bake in the heat for 4 days, then start sanding.
Right 1st step complete, now to sand, but the finish looked like Museli all over the boat? Ok this must be why you sand it back. Bought some 240 wet/dry, spent 8 hours sanding ( with block ) and managed to finish about 2 feet and it looked crapcry. Started to realise that I should of brushed it smooth while it was still wet. Ok I'll get some 180. Nope still not coming off fast enough. Bugger it, went and bought an orbital sander. AAAAHHHH crap every where and 2 weeks of further sanding. Do you ever get the feeling that you should of stuck with the original plan.
Mistake 1 : This won't take long!!! Finish Primer with a brush, will end up with smoother finish, easier to sand.
Mistake 2 : I've sanded back enamal primer, this won't be harder. When 2 pack dry's it very hard. Imagine sanding marble with wet newspaper.
Mistake 3 : The belief that you can roll a 2 pack paint,I now don't believe that you can roll a 2 pack paint and get a decent finish.
Mistake 4 : Not getting professional help. Speak to someone that knows what they are talking about.

Ok as you can guess by now I've had enough of sanding when I should be sailing, so I went to get professional help ( finally ). Went to the local crash repairer with boat and was told that they could finish and would start at $1000 and work up sick. Nope that aint gonna happen. I did shop around and have found a guy out south who will spray it once I have finished sanding. He has seen the boat and suggests that I continue sanding as he feels that it is close to complete. He won't give me a price until it is finished but assures me that it will be nowhere near $1000. So boat is still on my front garden and I'm sanding every weekend, hopefully it will be finished in a couple of weeks. I dont think I will get the finish that my imagination wants but I will be on the water. I will let you know how much he charges.

Your only mistake was you were served by an idiot. The muesli look I think means you had contamination bleeding into your paint. Did you have the correct sealer undercoat? You don't need thinners on the roller, it's for the tipping brush, you just throw the rollers away regulary really your better off with 3 coats of the right undercoat which is cheaper and easier to sand, then the topcoat looks a lot better. You can roll two pack but they are special 4 inch high density rollers that you buy in packs of 20, after you roll the paint on you go over it lightly with a 4 inch brush in a process called tipping. If you contact GDB services at Kilkenny they're a family owned business that mainly wholesale's marine paint to the trade but they will sell retail and they know paint. GDB have the rollers, the right thinners (thats extremely important because your tipping brush will have a bit of thinners on it )and sand paper I've also rolled and tipped International Brightside a single pack with quite reasonable results

I sprayed 2 pack on my old timber boat and it came up a treat, except for a bit of orange peel on one bow (temp of the air coming out of the compressor).

As Jeff said - Its all about the undercoat. I brushed on and sanded back 2 coats then sprayed a thinned 3rd coat to give an even white then the 1 top coat.

It didnt look as good as either of the Dunks boats, but it came up smooth and shiny and a winner in my eyes. grin

If it's waterproof I would just sail it Wannabe and sort it out next year. So what happened at Barmera?

we had good weather for the opening regatta, a bit of everything. unfortunatly didnt get many people thanks Greame for making the trip up (only one from adelaide).

We had 4 mossies on the water over the weekend, 1 paper tiger and 1 tiapan 5.7.

saturday we only got one of two races the wind was averaging around 18kts gusting to alot more, quick way to blow the cob webs out. Came to a battle of who could stay up the longest, with myself getting 1st over line and on yardstick sailing with the kite, followed by Mark P the only other to finish the course.

Sunday proved to be alot lighter 2 morning races were in moderate winds and the afternoon race dropping out to nearly nothing. mixed results for these races inclueding some boat swapping.

I think Mark took out the weekend with his mossie but not too sure as no one was too concerned with results and everyone enjoying them selves.

I agree alegayter_mossie it was a good weekend to blow the cob webs out. crazy

I think Mark did win over the weekend, pretty sure i even beat the 5.7 over the line in the last race. wink To it's defence it didn't have the normal skip and crew on deck.

Again thanks to greame and tim for comin to make a good weekend. Pitty greame the cam wasn't running in that first race on the Saturday, would have looked pretty wild!

Good luck to all for the states next month as i will not be able to attend. I guess i will catch you all at the nats.
