I was interested in something to measure speed and started searching. Quickly I realized that if I had a gps it made a lot of sense to be able to see VMG too. "Relatively cheap" was part of the specs too... So all that pointed to Iregatta app. I'm not ready to put my ipad on the cat yet, even if I had an appropriate hard case, but I might try with my daughter iphone 3gs (I'm working on that...). I made some tests walking and the ipad works great but the iphone 3gs doesn't. Walking speed seem to be too slow and I don't get speed reading. It seems that the iphone 4 and the ipad 2 have better gps than the iphone 3gs as I then read in google. So apparently I should be looking for an iphone 4 now.. But as it's not anymore on the cheap side, I'd like to hear opinions. Any body using it?

[Linked Image] Get the Magellan ToughCase. It doubles the battery life, makes it waterproof and has an enhanced GPS.

You can get them for under $100 through ebay. I just got one for Christmas and tested it on a cruise I went on. I have not tried it on my cat yet.

Thanks for the reply Craig. Yes, I've seen that one, some reviews made me hesitate but your comment helped me decide.... The order is placed and you'll be responsible if it doesn't work now!! smile

Now I will be able to use my other daughter's ipod too and I needed a waterproof case anyway, so it's a good deal.

Do you know if it's possible to put it on your arm or wrist somehow? Or how are you thinking to use it on the cat?

Cheers,
Andres

I will take all of the blame but none of the responsibility.

One major thing you need to know that is not stated is that you need to pull the phone out of the case to charge the case. If you plug in the case with the phone in it, it will charge the phone though.

[Linked Image]Forgot to mention. At the bottom on the back of the unit is a slat that you can put a lanyard through. My plan is to use a lanyard and tuck it into my life vest for easy access.

I also got the SPOT Communicator which works with my iPhone. It works using Bluetooth and gives me tracking and communication ability. I tested the Communicator on the cruise too. It works good once you figure out the proper steps in resetting the Bluetooth connection. If you preset messages and groups you only have to send text messages when you are in real trouble.

I got people that take care of that but I don't fool with that.

Lot of wisdom there ah..

Is this compatible with iPhone 4? The picture shows an iPhone 3 ...

Real Trouble? You mean like a day of single handing sailing and getting caught in a squall with a 50 MPH down blast thrown bow over stern, getting tangled by the sheet to the mast upside down, and swimming to catch the boat, and ending up capsized 10 miles off shore in the gulfstream near dusk with shredded sails?

My guess is he knows it's a IPhone3 because you can see the chrome on the face side of the phone? you can't on the 4. but the camera lens on the face is misleading.. there was none on the 3

That is the primary reason why I got the first SPOT unit. My wife was the one who had to pick up my crew so I could go back out looking for you. I still remember making that phone call to your wife to tell her you were lost at sea. Once we had kids, I knew I would need it for my wife to let me go racing again.

The ToughCase only fits the iPhone 3G(S) and iPod Touch (2nd & 3rd Generation).
It does not look like they are planning one for the 4G(S)but who knows.

Yep thanks!
Once I figured out I survived and was sitting on my boat upside down out of sight of land for hours drifting North I had a chance to reflect on the top 10 dumbest things I've done in my life as the Sun was sinking in the West.

#1 Telling my wife absolutely no matter how late I am never call the authorities again if I'm not home on time with the boat (after passing out drunk on the boat on the beach many years ago and the sheriff finding me after she reported me missing)!

#2 I can out run this storm

#10 Will they find me before I hit Georgia?

I have the Lifeproof case. It seems to work well and it is compact enough to keep the phone in it all the time.

I downloaded Iregatta onto my iphone4 last week after seeing your post and tried it last Sunday on a 50km race. I put it in an old GPS drybag and that didn't work too well as the screen was difficult to see due to so many marks on the bag and we were out of phone range so no data. On the upside we were able to hear music with the phone laying on the tramp quite loudly while we were going downwind.

I'm glad. It's quite rewarding to realize that I posted something almost useful...
Question: The track logs that you can export contain any speed or time information, or just positions?

Other questions:
- VMG is against wind direction or direction to next waypoint?
- When will the polar graph start capturing data? When you hit reset? When you enable tracking?
- Is there polar data available somewhere, so that you can load the theoretical polars of your boat?
