As a result of breaking my mast the week before last, the wires going from the transducers to the knotmeter displays were also broken. These wires are calibrated and sealed. Not exactly as easy as splicing them back together for a fix. The unit includes a transducer at one end with display dock at the other, and is one prefabrictated assembly. That being said, I cannot find a replacement part for this unit. The manufacturer told me that they have discontinued making the knotmeters. They do not have any of the units or parts in stock and will not be making any more. They said that any parts available will be whatever any of their distributors has left in stock. I have contacted and searched, Speedtech, the manufacturer, this site's online store, and just about all the other catamaran, and boat electronics distributors I can think of or find online. Anybody out there have any ideas where I can find this $30 part?

Also, if you haven't figured it out by now, stay away from purchasing the Speedtech, Speedmate knotmeters. Apparently, they are only going to manufacture weather instrumentation and have dropped the knotmeter line.

That's pretty bad customer service. Perhaps you can get the calibration spec from them? It shouldn't be much more than a simple (and very small) resistance value for the wire leading to the transducer. You might be able to splice it without a problem (as long as you seal it well - a tiny bit of corrosion would be a major problem) and just verify that you still have the proper resistance - worst case is that the speed indication will be off slightly but even then it would be off in a linear fashion.

Don-

You might try the FCA list...there's alot of stuff in Fboater's garages as well as knowledge on how to fix a problem.

I've got one of these...got it as an early release for 50% of the retail price if I provided them feed back. It's a nice unit...but I agree the cable is flimsy and need regualt replacement. Murrays.com used to have them on hand. If that doesn't pan out, just find the break and solder it back together. Better yet, replace most the line with a better/heavier gauge. The whole issue of "calibrated line" is moot since the Knotmeter itself is user calibratible. Read your instructions carefully and you'll see how to do this.

I have stopped using my unit and just go with a GPS mounted to the boom for all my readouts. The Speedmate was good, but more finicky to get the impellar in the right spot and to keep the cable from breaking.

Mike.
