I picked up my solarshields on a whim in a WalMart the last time I was in the USA. No WalMarts in Norway. Now I am almost sold on a Barz set.. Photochromatic and polarized *can not resist that*

I'll echo the sentiments about the Barz Goggles and Sunglasses. I've had great experiences with their goggles during all my Tybee experiences (5).

A new set of Barz also comes with different nose pieces so that you get the custom fit the you want.

Rolf: when you order them, be sure to ask for the clear seals as opposed to the black seals. They'll fit much better, allow for better air circulation, and will also keep the air between your eye and the lens cooler, which makes them much more comfortable.

I like Kaenon sunglasses. I've had Lasic and am a little more light sensitive than I used to be. I have Natives, Ocean Waves, Costa del mars and Kaenons. I like the Kaenons and the Costas the best. Kaenons usually stay on the best, except for when you break a trapline. If you've got cheap eyes buy cheap glasses.

Me too. I spent the middle 3rd of my first tybee 500 without the ability to see past the bow and I was so disappointing that I didn't get to see the shuttle on the pad (when we could go inside the 3mile zone to the 1 mile barrier. I tried the vented cups and the non-vented cups...tried changing the strap tension and the nose pieces around...tried rainex, cat crap, spit...but I never could get them comfortable or keep them from fogging up.

I now have some Rudy Project prescription glasses that I like but they do let some water in when it gets hairy. I have a nice set of Costa Del Mars that have little eye cups and they work awesome but still aren't quite perfect with that spray coming up from your feet. When it's really crazy, I've got these foam border googles ... sorta like skiing googles ... that I bought from New England Catamarans a few years ago. They work great when it's nukin' and it's a small price to pay for the reduction in my detail vision.

Todd,
I found that problem with the Barz with the rubber gaskets without holes in them. I switched to the gaskets with holes in them and it was no longer an issue.
I also found it's important not to overtighten the strap on the barz. They will still stay on... I ended up paddling through the surf two days at tybee and bashing the lenses against the hull and they didn't go anywhere or scratch.

I use the Kaenon Jetties with grey lenses and like them very much. Eileen uses Barz, though they do tend to get scratches on them. I think the Kaenon use rather hard Polycarbonite lenses.

Jake and others who had isses with the Barz goggles, what do you think the reason was? Head size to large for the goggles? wink

Tony, have you decided on what you are getting yet?

What the heck is skying? Skydiving with skis?

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but I'm on a search for a good pair of sailing glasses that will keep water out of my eyes. I've almost been tempted to wear my snowboarding goggles.

Has anyone heard of anybody trying Wiley X SG-1 glasses? Back in '03 when I was in Iraq, one of our companies received these glasses to help with the conditions. I noticed that the lenses were inserts with a rubber barrier that forms a barrier to your face. That barrier does have holes ..probably to help keep them from fogging up ...but I wonder how they would be with water constantly splashing in your face.

I also would like to get prescription for whatever I get

Those work pretty well. In extreme stuff, you still have a chance of getting water in your eyes. Barz makes googles with interchangeable seals - vented or not vented. I had a hard time getting the Barz to fit me properly though...probably my big nose!

I have used skiing goggles before and they work well. They're a little prone to damage though - I've popped the lenses out of a couple of pair before I gave up on them. There is another type that I have really grown to like but the name escapes me. They have a foam rubber frame with a pinned in tinted shield on the front. An elastic strap holds them to your head...they work really well...I'll have to get mine out tonight and see what they are.

The Specs are the most comfortable. In HEAVY spray, they will let water in at the top, making it difficult to wipe your eyes dry. I've switched to Oakley ski/motocross goggles.

Well I'd really like to get something with prescription. Jake, I'd love to find out what that brand is whenever you get a chance to get back and check. I do appreciate it.

I had thought about the Wiley X ones because I know they take prescription and I'd probably get a military discount. But if no one has tried them I rather not spend the coin to be the first to test them and find out they fail.

I know Barz has RX.

I've always been partial to Barz.

They've always worked great for me.

I have been using a pair of prescription Sea Specs ordered from their site for several years. They are excellent.

I agree with Opher - prescription SeaSpecs ARE excellent. The wrap-around polarized lenses give me peripheral protection and the strap keeps the sunglasses comfortably in place for hours. And they are affordable - big plus for me! Check it out - turnaround time is quick, too! www.seaspecs.com
