I was wondering if anyone had a good method to temporarily hold the tiller extension? I frequently sail solo and this would be nice to have while adjusting something else. Especially while trapezing.

Many years ago, I purchased a thing that was U shaped that the tiller extension could be squeezed into. It bolted into the H-16 traveler groove. Worked great, but it was not stainless steel, just rubber coated, and rusted after a year or two. I have not seen anything similar since.

I was thinking velcro this time. Glue one side to the tiller extension in one spot and the other side on a part of the boat or rear beam.

Any thoughts?

Patrick Ragen

I tied some heavy shock cord from the centre on my rear beam to the centre of my cross bar.

I can put the tiller down to use both hands to adjust things and the boat just keeps going straight ahead.

It works well on my boat because the helm is well balanced.

Maybe it could work on your boat?

I have also seen a setup somewhere using velcro,, although this would take some spacers and thought to make it compatible with a hotstick.

I had a good system on my H16. I used the loop portion of industrial velcro wrapped all the way around the stick near the handle. It covered about 6" of the stick. The hook portion of the velcro was on top of the crossbar at each end. It covered an area about 4" long, maybe 1" wide. You just have to put your loop portion on the stick so it will be about where it will hold when at its normal extension. On the 16, I preferred it at fully collapsed. Good luck.

I assume she held it until it collapsed, and she preferred it fully extended?

Sit on it. With a cheek if hiking.
Otherwise (trapped), I switch the sheet temporaily to my rearmost hand (tiller hand) and then use the other hand for jib sheet etc adjustment. Never got into this holding the stick like a giant pencil over the shoulder deal.
Hope I'm not stating the obvious. I single hand all the time, and deal with it.
