Trems and Warren tris are WAY too big. I'm thinking the 18 is a bit heavy (and a bit of a tail dragger) for solo use. Assembling a Trem solo would take a long time. A seawind is likewise big and hard to assemble solo.

All good ideas for crewed cruising though.

I like the Gcat idea with the front tramp. Is it any lighter than the TheMightyHobie18 I have?

Tiki Pete had (or still has?) a Wharram 21 I think, which is a plywood homebuilt cat for cruising.

It's not "Light" by beach cat standards, but much better for "cruising" as it's got lots of storage space and sleeping down below, and a hard deck as well as a tramp forward of the mast. I'll see if I can google up a picture of one. I saw one here on my lake for about $3,000 but that was years ago, don't know where it ended up.

Here is a link to the Wharram site, and a shot of a 21's storage space. http://www.multihulls.uk.com/wharram/t21_1235.htm

And of course there's a You Tube vid of it underway! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5dhFVp4_C0

Good suggestion with the Tiki 21. The setup time is the killer though. Any non folding tri or wider than a tilt trailer setup is pretty much out for me as I'd like to sail rather than rig. I think something like an 18 square with freeboard would be about right. Uni rig, light (enough), spin for offwind stuff, simple setup. Keeping it to 8'6" would be even better.

Going to the way back files, a lighter and smaller version of the hard decked 19' Pacific cat would be a great general purpose daysailor and camp cruiser. Foam core would go a long way toward making the hard deck **** area light enough, alhtough a tramp might be just as good solo. My 18's tramp is fine for two since the arched beams means my buddy won't end up in my face in the morning. However, the 18 is HEAVY. Adding freeboard to it wouldn't help much either in the weight department. In fact, my double Tamanu is a better cruising ride after doing it back to back in '08 on the TheMightyHobie18 and '09 on the Double tamanu hulled TheMightyHobie18 rigged cat.

But a 20x8'6" boat that weighs 400# is way more than I need solo...thus this thread. The Hobie AI or TI are close in tri form if a bit slow. Is there anything in cat form that springs to mind?

"... a lighter and smaller version of the hard decked 19' Pacific cat...."

I've sailed a P-cat for many years now.

Great boat for its time and tougher than nails. Sailing it has been lots and lots of fun.

It has been the finest for goof off sailing, beach camping and scuba diving in Mexico. Dragging it around behind a mini van to accommodate 4 of us, camping and scuba gear was a breeze.

Since I purchased a Stiletto 27 to give us better range, the ability to boat camp, and to cross Mexico's Sea of Cortez to the Baja, I haven't used it much.

If you want a great platform, its all there and I'll give it to you if you want to transport it from the Bear Lake area of Idaho where it is now sitting (no trailer).

While you're there, we can goof off sail on one of the several beach cats I still have, I'll flip some burgers for you and you can help me re-step the mast on the Stiletto 27.

Is life good or what...?

When is the Bear Lake regatta? I'm not kidding! I'd love to do some western lakes if I had just a little company.

You're just down the road! I 80 that is & 1300 miles of it. OTOH, free is a mighty motivator. I might have to mull this one over. I'm sure a flatbed would get it done jsut fine with appropriate blocking and strapping without having to fit a trailer. Is this the P cat I saw on thebeachcats site? The chance to check out the stiletto would be an added bonus.

Just put it on the roof...you'll be fine as long as you keep it under a hundred!

Most everyone drives nearly that down 80 through Wyoming... That would be a heck of a roofrack to take 600#! But i do remember the fella that made Turtle bay and went down the west coast, across the isthmus (not via the Panama canal), across the Carribean, and over to Florida rooftopped his 16' cabin cat on an old station wagon from BC...so anything can be done.

At least 100lbs lighter. I've heard as low as 260.

That's some good news. I had no idea the TheMightyHobie18 was that much heavier than the G cat. With it's front tramp it's really attractive for beachcruising. Stowing gear in the hulls is still problematic though. I wonder how big of hatches might fit on one. Having the option of wings would be pretty nice, although I don't think it ever came with that option.
