My wife and I were sailing on a broad reach yesterday with the spinnaker up and she was fully trapped out, when the windward spinnaker stay let go and my carbon fiber pole snapped in half.

I plan on replacing it with an aluminum pole, but first I have to figure out how to remove the snuffer from the old pole and attach it to the new one. It looks like it is glued on or something. Any ideas?

I'll take some today... Also, any ideas where can I purchase a 3.5 meter aluminum tube in Tampa Bay? Google is failing me.

You can get an extrusion from Jill Nickerson at RedGear racing for very little money. Well I say very little, but it's inexpensive compared to buying the snuffer and or a boom.

You will be able to make your snuffer pole and have enough left for a spare for your boom, at least I think there will be enough left over. It's been over a year since I made my spare, and I've had a few beers since then.

Picts are here:

I believe it's an old windsurfing mast. The spar itself looks like it was repaired in the same spot at some point in the past.

It looks like the chute is glued on with some sort of epoxy. I took it to Ellie's Sailing Shop today and he didn't think the chute could be removed without damaging it.

I talked to a local metal supplier and he said a 20ft length (of 1-1/4 which is actually 42mm outside diameter) would cost me about $60 but I would still need to get it anodized (I haven't priced that.)

A sunfish boom is more like 48mm OD so I was thinking it would be too big, but I can probably pick one up for very cheep. I would still need to either figure out how to swap the chute or get a new one...

What to do?

could you run a smaller diameter pole through the center of this older one?

Maybe just reinforce the broken area?

I guess you may have to just grind off the original pole from this hoop if you want to epoxy it on to something else...?

I bought a 12 foot anodized section from Robbie Daniel yesterday. It just so happened my spin pole snapped at a regatta he was attending. He had a 6 pack of these so its something they carry on a regular basis.

Dan, where did the spin pole bridal line break, at the bow (chafe?) or at the tip of the pole? And did the line actually break or did a knot come undone at one end or the other?

I've been worried about chafe at the bow, my bridals pass through a hole in the bow, with a stopper knot on the backside. I've been thinking of using some plastic tubing to prevent chafe there, is that your setup?

Timbo,

The line didn't break, a knot came undone. The way my boat is setup, there is a loop in the hull and the end of the stay is tied to a carabiner which is clipped on the loop. I think the idea was to make it easy to clip the poll on/off without having to worry about the chafing that you are concerned about. Instead the knot (a round turn and a few half-hitches) came loose. I should have inspected it more often and wrapped it in rigging tape.

why do you have to anodize it? I (better: my wife) broke my boom after capsizing in half, I replaced it by a standard 40mm*2mm (being obliged to buy 9m I have now 2 additional spare booms)...w/o anodizing...no problem...

If its anodized, it won't turn everything that touches it black. You could polish it and eliminate some of that.
