I'm thinking about having a set of wings made for the Blade. Has anyone given any thought to dimensions?

My FXone, they came out two feet(ish) and up at an angle about 8-10 inches.

I'm boatless.

They were about two inches in diameter. I don't really remember they wall thickness.

I'm boatless.

No. They idea is to avoid trapezing all together. I just don't feel safe trapezing when day sailing.

I trapezed off the wings of my H17 and TheMightyHobie18 but that was many moons ago.

Do you know anyone who could fabricate a set?

Any of the many marine aluminum fabricaters near you. Try the phone book.

I have wanted to make a set also. I am pretty sure that I can get the local Midas shops to bend the tubing to the shape I want for a pretty reasonable price and pretty quickly (I asked about it when I did some consulting for them a few years ago); they bend steel tubing as needed for exhaust systems. I suspect someone else would have to do any welding but I have a friend who has a shop that does that. Do you know what tubing thickness to use (I would want to be able to trapeeze and to hold at least two people on the wing). I had a 1984 Hobie Magnum with lightweight yet robust wings but never took measurements.

I also had an 18 Magnum. But no, I didn't take any measurements.

I recently took a pair of 18M wings and fitted them to my mystere 6.0. I think these would be about 2 feet to long for an F16 and way to much weight. Total weight about 38 pounds. Not much effect on a 450 pound boat but a lot on an F16. Fabricating something using carbon fiber tubes with alum bends would be much lighter.

The Hobie 18 Magnum early years had much lighter wings (and shorter) than what followed later. I do not know what year they changed but I know that the ones I had were surprisingly light, especially for the amount of weight they would hold.

Pete,

Have you talked to Matt about how to attach them to the hulls?

No, I don't think he'd have much interest. In any case I've already decided they would insert into the cross bars. Not sure how though.

I have three possible plans:

* add some wings so it will be safer to sail unsupported
* modify it into a small tri, just because.
* sail it as is. This is where the smart money goes.

Merry Christmas.

Mine went into the beams. Pretty simple setup, and I think they worked pretty well.

I have a very good set of Magnum wings. If anyone needs measurements or wall thickness let me know via personal e-mail and I will get you what dimensions you need.

I can manufacture a set, I would not count on a place like Midas to make nice bends, even if they have a mandrel bender its likely their dies will gouge the tube. I would purchase bends online, they are not all the expensive and weld from there. A short piece of smaller tube for making sleeves makes things easier. I considered them on my I20 but concluded that I didn't even use them all that much on the old hobie.

Not familiar with a blade, is there a track in the beams that could be use? Otherwiser some AL plate could be cut on a water jet to support the tube inside of the beam.
