The reset for how the US will be competitive in competing in international competition continues.

The NOR's for the under 20 ISAF worlds qualifiers have been published. The Stevens trophy will be awarded to the top F16 Junior Team (open).

Applications are now open for the 2013 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships. This year’s event will be an ISAF Youth Worlds Qualifier and will be hosted by Corpus Christi Yacht Club, Corpus Christi, TX from August 12-16. The Notice of Race and application links are posted online at http://championships.ussailing.org/Youth/US_Youth_Champs.htm. Complete instructions on the application process can be found at http://championships.ussailing.org/Youth/US_Youth_Champs/How_to_Apply.htm . Applications will close at midnight on March 15th – NO EXCEPTIONS.

Entry is by resume and they cap the total number of sailors.

The basic idea is that elite sailors are bunching up in the traditional youth classes. High performance classes are under subscribed. US Sailing asserts that Sailors are Sailors and can jump platforms easily... The carrot to jump is the ISAF world slots. So, US Sailing will review resumes for acceptance in all of the ISAF classes at the youth championships... They are encouraging junior sailors to apply for multiple classes for the ISAF qualifiers and they will select the strongest field in all of the classes.

An extensive resume and application is due by March 15. If you have a strong junior sailor in your cat fleet OR know of a strong junior sailor in your Yacht Club...
YOU CAN HELP..

Spread the word... in my area the YC junior programs are not up to speed on this huge change.

Encourage the junior cat sailors you know to take the challenge.

Encourage the hot shot laser or 4 twinkie sailor in your club to consider the F16 competition and get them on the water with some stick or sheet time on your catamaran.

Several of us on the MHC are just wrapping our heads around the new program and will be looking to what our roll should be moving forward in supporting junior catamaran racing.

The March 15 deadline just over a month away...
so... individuals will need to step up and help.

Youth champs has been a limited entry, application only event for many years now. The difference this year is US Sailing is using youth champs as the Youth Multihull Championship, which is a great change.

It also appears that US Sailing is modifying the selection process for the 2014 youth worlds team. For 2013, the selection was based on a single regatta qualifier (in Sarasota last month). For 2014 it appears that the selection process will be application based, but I can't find it anywhere.

Jeff, I think this upcoming Texas event is the single regatta selection for the 2014 ISAF event.

5.5 The first place winners of the 2013 ISAF Youth World Qualifier Regatta in all disciplines
using the same equipment as in the USYSC will be automatically invited provided they
apply per NOR 5.1 and 5.2.

Sarasota looked like a quick fix to get sailors for this season.

The difference moving forward is that you must be invited to compete ...It is still a bring your own boat regatta. The major carrot is that the winner of each class will represent the USA in 2014.

I agree that including the multihull chaampionship as just one of the youth classes was a great step forward.... no more seperate but equal status.

Moreover, US Sailing is encouraging top junior sailors to consider the other classes with the resume and cap approach.... This will be great for multihull sailing if more juniors jump into the game... Hopefully, they stay in the game long after their junior careers end.

Mark, I believe that NOR 5.5 means that the sailors who won the 2013 youth qualifiers will be invited to the 2013 youth champs.

Here is the part about 2014 youth worlds:
20.8 Competitors in the following disciplines: Girls Singlehanded Dinghy and Boys
Singlehanded Dinghy (Laser Radial), Girls Doublehanded Dinghy and Boys
Doublehanded Dinghy (I-420), Open Skiff (29er), Open Multihull (Formula 16), and Boys
Windsurfer and Girls Windsurfer (RS:X with 8.5m2 sail and 60 cm fin), who are under the age of 19 years on 31 December 2014 (Born after 31 December 1995) are eligible to
have their scores considered as a qualifying event for the US Sailing Team Sperry Youth World Sailing Team to compete at the 2014 ISAF Youth World Championships.

Is a direct cut and paste from Liz... So... after a phone conversation... Apparently, the key word is AN.. and not the word THE... The intention seems to be that this will be one of possibly more and to be determined down the road Qualifiers for 2014 selection.

But if your kid is interested... they must at least make the application for the event by the deadline

The US Sailing Youth Champs is basically an invitational regatta (apply via sailing resume) for youth sailors under 20. That being said, only teams that are under 18 can qualify to go to the ISAF Youth Worlds in 2014.

This regatta is one of two qualifiers, so people that want to attend 2014 Youth Worlds have to sail in both...they have not officially announced the second regatta but it may be in December as part of another large youth event!

One of the big struggles is that the teams have to apply together and many of the youth multihull teams are not paired up for summer sailing by March 15.

At the 2013 Youth Worlds qualifier in Clearwater last month it was awesome to watch all the Laser, 29er and I420 sailors gawk and drool a little as the F16's flew by them all! I think it is great that US Sailing has combined the events lending credibility and visibility to the Multihull world.

Dave, while searching for details on the 2014 event (specifically looking for the boat to be used, and could not find that), I stumbled across your website. Very impressive goals you have!
