Posts: 127 Rock Hill,SC | Day 1 was beautiful. A close reach to the island in about 10-12kts of breeze, we (RC) just barely got there in front of the lead boat, Michael McNair and Krista Vind on a newly acquired Hobie 20 (a replacement for the one destroyed at Dauphin Island). 36 boats started, 32 made the trip to the island for chicken and beer. After lunch and the obligatory group picture we started Race2 for the return trip. Another fast one, lead boats made the trip in right about an hour each way.
Sunday morning is blustery and blowing about 15kts with it expected to build. Fortunately the anticipated storms aren't expected until late afternoon. Most everyone decided to pack it in, but Joe Pocreva, Ken Altman, and Michael Argood decided to take a shot at beating the record for the Round Deer Island course. One Hobie 16, Boz and Rafe decide to sail a short course to #12 and back. We are all upstairs at the club waiting for sails to appear behind Deer Island.
Another great weekend at Ocean Springs Yacht Club!

Posts: 127 Rock Hill,SC | Sure Dave - Altman capsizes in the channel behind the casinos and lets Pocreva get away. Around south of Deer Island it is a beat requiring all to tack out at least once. Joe's lead looks insurmountable, if only they can keep it upright. It was not to be. Pocreva capsizes near the turning mark for home after missing the trap ring (that is the story he is sticking with). His son Joey manages to right the N20 BY HIMSELF,but can't turn down to pick up dad. Fortunately Mark Ederer was following along in his power boat(new boat did not arrive in time for the regatta), picked Joe up and returned him to his boat. They were done. Michael Argood, on his Nacra F-18 kinda lost the rig when a staymaster broke off at the hull. I was told later that this is known problem (maybe not well known). I say kinda lost the rig because his crew was able to hold the mast at about a 45 degree angle as they limped several miles back towards the finish line. About a half mile out the rig finally dropped, but they were blowing right towards the club by then. Last minute they get hung on a piling and Robbie Halstead and several others waded out to help them ashore. Despite Ken's efforts, Duly's record still stands.

Ah the old "I missed my trap ring story" The one thing the crew can't do for them... skippers! The shroud attachment point is a known C2 issue and Jill will replace it for free, was it a C2 or Infusion? Since we are on the subject of C2 issues, make sure the bronze bit that the diamonds attach to is replaced with the Derlin (sp) version. The bronze makes bad thing happen to the inside of the mast and since the C2 mast is the thickness of a beer can it doesn't take long.

And stay masters snapping off is known? Exactly where is the failure point?

Posts: 3,906 Clermont, FL, USA | Infusion, and it snapped right at the hull. I wasn't aware the Infusions were having the same issue... that's a bummer. I'm not sure if Nacra is replacing the part for free. Ricky what's the scoop?

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | Infusion, and it snapped right at the hull. Yikes...time for an inspection. I will tell you this, though, most of the ones that I have seen are pretty firmly affixed to the hull and not oriented so the pivot axis is in proper orientation with the mast. If they're setup wrong, the misalignment will create large bending stresses on that fitting with a lot of cycle loading (resulting in fatigue). I noticed mine were not aligned properly when I got my boat so I rotated the deck fitting so the stay master would swing toward the mast and the pivoting function would absorb any misalignment (they were both 90 degrees away from this orientation and it took some effort to turn them). I'll be disassembling to check that fitting before our next sail. Thanks for the heads-up!

Posts: 267 Ocean Springs, MS | Fell off the boat. I remember fiddling with the "can't miss" ring then it was, "good bye cruel world". What a great weekend of sailing. I was so proud of the kid for righting that big boat on his own. Obviously a wind assist but quite an accomplishment. I'll have seatbelts installed for me next time. It's awesome to get to sail with my kids even if it includes occasional swimming. cheers. jopo

Do you have a plastic keeper on the harness spreader bar hook? When I miss, it's usually because the ring didn't make it past the plastic keeper into the throat of the hook...I've started removing the plastic keepers.
