Looking at purchasing a 1977 Nacra 5.2 and had a few questions for those more experienced. The boat has been sitting for the past two years outside and it shows. Dosent look like anything a good wetsanding/compounding/polishing couldnt remedy . My real question is with the hulls. Both are very solid where the cross beams attach and all the way up till the last three feet of the bow. When pressing in this area the hulls do flex (tin can?). How much flex here is acceptable since this is a glass boat and not foam cored. I know there is a stiffner in that area and can sort of feel it when pressing in. Looking from the outside it appears the front of both hulls have been painted with something other than gelcoat. This is making me a little nervous. I am willing to open the deck lids to repair if need be and figure the paint can be removed to get back to the gelcoat

Also the rudder has a bad spot on the bottom that may or may not be repairable.
The boat is missing the mainsheet tackle and possibly downhaul? tackle. Other than that new sheet and it would be good to go.

I will attach photos to make up for my lackluster job of describing the boat lol. Is this a worth while project? I am not afraid to do repairs to the boat just dont know if it is beyond repair. Also what would be a good ballpark estimate for a boat in such a condition??

Thanks

$50? Sounds like a lot of work, replacing gear, etc.

The is/was a good overall design though.

This just sounds really old, in disrepair, etc.

NOthing wrong with projects, but the boat is not worth much atm.

I looked at the pics. It has the 'center bar'
But, is it in TX? It has TX numbers on the hull. Makes it worth more ;-)

The hulls will flex considerably by hand, hard to describe how much though. I would do a coin tap test to compare the sound of the glass in the bows compared to the rest of the boat.

The 5.2 is not a very valuable boat, especially one of this age. Ive seen newer complete and ready to sail boats trade in the $700-1,500 range. This boat likely needs a few hundred dollars worth of running rigging, re-stiching on the tramp, trailer tires, plus all of the labor to clean it up. I would value it at ~$0. (you might even do him a favor hauling it away for free)

Its not a project I think would be worth taking on unless you really want a 5.2, or you have more time than money and really want a project.

I purchased a 1983 5.2 in similar condition from a sailing/rowing club 100 miles away from home. It was described to me as an 18' Nacra and was $600 so I bought it sight unseen and paid for it over the phone. After driving a couple hours after work to go pick it up I discovered it was a 17' 5.2 and not a 5.5 as the description led me to believe. I decided to let them keep the money and the boat and leave empty handed. I have no regrets at all about that decision.

It is not in Texas fortunately....it called texas home till it was towed to where it sits today.

The original asking price was 975 and is currently sitting at 700....was thinking about making an offer of 500 but now I am thinking otherwise.

Not looking for something cutting edge to go race hard every weekend....just something cheap to have some fun on...

This thing deserves a fix up, but looks like a money-pit. Any sails? I'd pass, unless you want a labor of love project, and they want to give it to you for free. As others have said, there are almost complete boats around in decent condition for the sort of money they are asking, or not much more.

yep, skip elliot sails included are still pretty fresh and have been stored indoors...

beginning to think it may not be the project I imagined. especially considering the price of a ready to sail H16

I sold my 5.2 a couple of years ago for $800. It was ready to sail with no soft spots and a good trailer, brand new tramp, sails were OK for a few more years of recreational sailing. That boat looks very rough and for the money you would put into just making it sail again, you could buy a decent boat ready to go.
