So, here’s the suggestion from Randy Smyth: Rename the event the 50/50 ‘round the Island Race.

1. Keep it 100 miles but break it into two days of 50 miles each.
2. Start in Fort Walton with a Bermuda start: Slowest boats at 7 am and various starts during the morning based on their handicap. So, the first boat at the finish is the first boat overall etc. No handicaps are figured after the finish.
3. In good weather on Saturday we race from Fort Walton out Destin pass in the Gulf to Pensacola Pass to Chicken Bone Beach in Pensacola (after Fort Pickens but before the first condo in Gulf Breeze). In bad weather on Saturday we race from Fort Walton inside the Intercostal to Chicken Bone Beach.
4. We host a BBQ on the beach ‘tail gate style’ Saturday at sunset.
5. Sunday we normally race home in the intercostal from Chicken Bone Beach to Fort Walton. However, if we went inside Saturday we would sail back to Fort Walton Sunday via the Gulf if the weather cooperate.

Fort Walton Yacht Club wants to host the Round the Island Race the last weekend in September 2016. Our greatest worry is the safety of all racing in the event first and foremost. I am personally asking for help from the community to join us in planning this event. I can be contacted by cell phone 850-305-9653 or email Patssun@yahoo.com

Thanks in advance for your help!

I like the 50/50 idea with the party on the beach. Downside is needing ground crew to bring clothes, etc to overnight at P'cola beach.

Depends on how you look at it. If you are coming from out of town it means a considerable increased expense to bring and house someone that can cart your stuff around and could be a show stopper to some.

It would be interesting to hear if the event organizers have any ideas on how to make that planning factor easier to plan for so they might get more out of area people to attend. A van to toss your stuff in the morning that will be at the day 1 finish or something....are there any hotels within walking distance of day 1? etc. Just a thought.

The change the Steeplechase made last year to get the intermediate finish and the start/finish lines closer together made the logistics of the race incredibly easier. We spent a lot more time relaxing and enjoying ourselves and less time in the truck driving back and forth. it was much more enjoyable.

And along with room in the van for a bag of clothes, beach wheels almost always seem to be a logistical problem.

All valid points but the participation in the RTI has been falling off pretty sharply and the risk of trying something different seems worth it to me.

There have been many RTI's when we have sailed by Key Sailing and it took a fair amount of discipline to keep from making the turn right knowing I was sailing away from a beer and burger and into a long drift through the narrows. With the 50/50 format I don't have to make the decision now the beer and burger is part of the event :-)

Question is, how can we raise the appeal of the race for non-spin boats? There are shed load people that are perfectly happy sailing without a spinnaker even on a distance race.

Guys y'all worry about the racing. We'll get your personal items and equipment moved, staged and positioned as part of the race weekend. Its just something we will have to plan for ahead of time. We have to have all the race committee equipment and event support stuff like tables, chairs, coolers and like items there too. The way I see it y'all are going to help load the truck twice and race committee will unload the truck twice. Not a big deal. And if there are so many boats we have to have two or three trucks then that's a good problem to have!

Well it looks and sounds like ya'll are plannin' to step up and host a well organized beachcat distance race from white sandy beaches into clear blue water. I heard something about coolers, which means there will be cold beer! As a wise old man once told me... "this is a good path".

Keep the info coming, we'll be there.

With the 50/50 format, I'd like to do it on the A-Cat.
