The long running Newport to Ensenda race has a class for ORCA but of course that does not accept beachcats. That has not stopped Alan Thompson of La Jolla, CA from running the race. He has just completed the race again in his 8th attendance.

He starts with the multihulls and passes outside of the official start line. I bootleg entry, pirate attendee, or whatever you call it.

This year the winds were light and Alan Thompson with crewman John Gleason of Marina Del Rey, CA were on the water for more than 28 hours.

I assume if it has no marks or gates it is a distance race, from here to there.(?)

Statue Race is a one day event indeed - usually somewhere between 5 and 8 hours. It's not around the cans, unless you consider the Statue as a very large can, but that would be a very controversial statement so I did not say that.

I would call a distance race, a race comprised of legs with distances of at least a few miles each.
