We're getting there. Lots of stuff done, stuff still to be done. I'm not sure for an effort like this that you're ever truly %100 ready.

You get to a point where you feel like theres nothing else you can do but just do the race but you'll still be aprehensive. Thats how I felt.

BTW, try not to have a heart attack on the first day between the 1 minute horn and the start. I felt like mine was about to burst out of my chest the first time.

I mentioned to Alec last night that we must be getting close because I'm running out of $100-$500 items I feel the need to run out and buy! We still have some mainsheet and trap gear issues to flesh out. The weather and gear availability hasn't aided our ability to get out on the water much. Today we were going to test and begin to break down, but this mighty low system is here, winds steady in the 30+ range, gusts 36 - 38.

I've been watching the NOAA bouys, FL has been under a high pressure system for a while, winds have been light. Tonight they get the effects of this storm pushing through, nasty stuff predicted - hope that doesn't happen when we're out there!

Speaking of weather - are there any preferred weather services people check during this race?

Weather services? They are all working on the 50% rule therefore they are never wrong. BTW, 40% chance of showers/t-storms every day until November.

Just kiddin'

Believe me when I say this, that 4 or 5 hours of 25-30 is much preferred to 17 hours of 2-3.

The thing is, the seabreeze will kick in usually around 12-1. The two years I did the race, I can remember having a lot of air at a start ONCE. If for some reason the seabreeze doesn't kick in, then you have to look for thunderstorms.

I couldn't believe it when JDub told me this, but he said "if its light and you see a black cloud, head right for it." He was right. Try to think about how fast you're going instead of the fact that you hooked into a carbon fiber lightning rod via a stainless steel cable <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

If the clouds hang over the shore, you're screwed.

Have fun!

Does anyone need a hard working person for their ground crew? I'm a skiff/collegiate/bigboat sailor with a rigging company. I would really like a chance to get involved with a team.

Hey Dan,

Not many people on this forum read the sub-forums. Post on the Open Forums.

Guys,

Is there a list of required safety equipmentfor the race?

Also if anyone has a list of additional gear that's needed that would be great too.

Off the top of my head, the list is as follows:

Lifejacket
whistle
personal strobe
charts of the area
"safety line" (tether)
EPIRB/PLB (1 per boat, although I'd prefer to have one on me at all times)
non-expired flares
compass

Additional stuff that's needed for the race as it relates to your person:
Hydration pack
powerbars
big floppy hat
plenty of sunscreen
kevlar bottom'd booties (scuba boots work well for this)
"light sticks" (those things that ravers whirl around - useful for chart reading at night)

Hello everybody,
I am a Nacra I20 sailor from the Netherlands and wish to participate in the Tybee 500 of 2009. The problem is getting the boat in Florida for this race. Wondering if there are any possibilities/ ideas of having a (rental) boat. We would bring our own rigging. Is there anybody who has a solution?
Thx
Pierre

Pierre,

Posting this in the open forum might produce more of a result since not many people look at this forum. Also, contacting the Race organizer might help as he might know someone who wants to charter their boat.

amsterdam,

check your private messages. I think I have a source of charter boats and other services.

(If the Carpal Tunnel manages to stay away, I'll be there for the finish I hope.)

Have you tried DR Franks spray for pain? I use it and it really works for me.
