On the Yahoo Beachcats newsgroup, it was identified as a Pacific Cat, or P-cat.

Doesn't look like a Pacific Cat. Definitely looks like a Rodney MacAlpine-Downey design. Like Bob, I was going to say Phoenix, although the Phoenix was 18 feet long. If it was a Phoenix, somebody completely replaced the decks and everything up top. The Phoenix had a trampoline deck, and this one has some sort of home-made fiberglass thing.

O K
NOW NAME THE TRAILER ITS ON

WHEW it needs a little fixing up -

The P Cat was a 19 ft boat ,--this is 17
though has some similar features such as radiused solid crossbeam
The P-cats were also spin rigged .

Bob,s guess of a Phonex is close,-
I repaired one and gave it to a beginning sailor
it had alum crossbeams though similar hull shapes.

This could be an earlier prototype of the Phenix later changed and simplified ,--not sure

here is a fun website

Are the hulls open on this boat? Where you can sit on the edge and put your feet in. Are there any other cats out there that have this feature?

The owner of a Pacific 18 emailed me that the boat was indeed a P-Cat 18. A picture of one under sail is at

Unfortunately it doesn't show the hulls well, but I was assured it looked just like the one on eBay.

I don't think it looks anything like it at all.

Mary, a couple of identifying features stand out.

First of all the front crossbar arc and second, the front bow "foil" both features which are unique and identical.
