...MacGregor 26X?

Apparently, this delusional guy Frank (mighetto) is making claims about his boat that somehow the Mac26X is related to hobies because they came equipped with Coleman ice chests.

The guy is delusional, and it constantly compares his mac26x to a multihull. If nothing else I just had to share this link with you guys just for a laugh. Just when you think its not possible someone could be so misguided, he says something else that puts your head spinning in place.

http://www.sailinganarchy.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2833

the hobie-link starts on page 8 I think :P

I promise you'll be laughing on the floor by the end of page 2.

And for those of you that don't know what a MacGregor 26 is; it's a boat that is a compromise between a sailboat and a power boat and it accomplishes neither terribly well.

In anycase the Mac26x is tied to the Hobie Cat beach boats through its ice chest and also through Hobie Cat athletes. Remember that MacGregor produced cruising cats for many years. Many owners (not me) beach Mac26x cruisers like a catamaran. I have listened to many versions of a story involving Hobie Cat athletes sailing a Mac26x at 17 MPH in Mexican or San Franciscan waters and one of these days I will bump into a first hand witness, assuming the story is true. The story usually involves a fleet of Hobie Cats with a Mac26x serving as mother ship. The Cats take off and those left on the mother ship take chase and achieve 17MPH under sail. Most assume the athletes on the mother ship hiked out and sailed unballasted. However, having achieved 12 and 13 MPH on several occasions now fully ballasted - with crew sitting inside the life lines - I doubt the X was unballasted or rigged so that hiking out could be supported. One captain has reported to Sailnet of reaching 17 MPH by starting off fully ballasted and dropping the ballast after stabilizing the boat on a downwind point of sail.

Very good Maugan,

I think all that talk about "mother ships" kind of gives the game away with this guy, he's been watching to much X-files.

True theoretical hull speed on that thing is probably somewhere around 7 knots (under sail) and it doesn't carry much sail area.

I'm still trying to figure out what a hobiecat athlete is.

Do they get sponsorships?

Do I have to reinstall my cooler rack to be one?

Help! I'm all confusilated!

Hey,

I'm starting to like this " mothership " idea. It would be a nice place to carry extra beer and maybe some fried chicken! Plus, the guy seems to like catsailors ......... at least hobiecat sailors. As we all know, many people look at all catamarans as hobiecats. Many times people will look at my I17R or NACRA 6.0 and say " nice Hobie Cat!" Which is fine by me.......I know what they mean.

The mothership ........ it does sound futuristic! I mean you could come up with all types of ideas from pirates raiding sailing vessels in the Carribean ...... to something out of Waterworld. Instead of jetskis you could have catamarans and a huge "Mothership" that they would be based out of.

Well, I mean, this guy compares his boat to a Farrier tri all the time. He says he can do an ocean crossing in it, and we're trying to egg him on by taking up a collection to hook up his floating beer cooler with gps trackers so we can watch his progress. It'll be like a real life Survivor episode :P

Mind you this thing has stays that are thinner than my H17. 3/32"

Akin to how fortune cookies should properly be interpreted by ending each fortune with "...between the sheets" (try it, it works!) you should probably end every claim on this website with "...while motoring".

Wow, this guy's not all there. He put an amazing amount of work into building a huge Web site to only support the theory that he is crazy or stupid. He must drive a taxi or have some other profession that allows him long hours to daydream without access to accurate information. His site is like a bad car wreck: it's hard to not look.

Well I've noticed that traffic around here dies significantly when it starts getting warmer in the northern hemisphere.

He could be sailing ..

In 1999, by son, grandson and I decided to sell our water ski boat and buy a new boat. Since we already had our sailboats, two Hobie 17's we decided it might be time to add a larger sailboat we could also use for cruising. The Mac Gregor 26 looked interesting so we gave it a try. Luckly we picked a day with about 20 MPH wind. Under power it seemed OK, like any powerboat that size. Under sail, it was a different story. We enjoyed laying it over, nearly putting the rail in the water, much to the dismay of the dealer. Luckily we listened to my Grandson, four at the time, who declared the boat "Tippy". We bought a SeaRay 210 Sundeck instead, kept the Hobie H-17's, taught the Grandson how to sail on Hobie Wave's at two "Fast and Funs" and the local Community Sailing School, www.sailsandpoint.org. Any time we feel the need to go cruising we will go out with friends, or rent a larger sailboat, which we have done in the past.

Did the dealer mention the "mothership" ability of the mac26? Would have been perfect for your pre-existing hobie fleet! :P

That boat is silly looking. Reminds me of a bad "B" movie where some guys stole the competitors ferrari, chopped off the front half and installed it in their sailboat.

Anyone remember what movie that was??!??

" #8 A TALL RIDGED MAST IS BETTER THAN A SHORT BENDING MAST
How can this be? Sailboards out sail anything on the water and have the shortest and most bendable masts of any vessel. I understand the argument that in light wind conditions a tall mast will catch wind that is more powerful than the wind scraping the surface of the water. But I do not understand how a taller mast could improve pointing." (Mighetto, 2004)

Bad part is, he actually believes the non-sense that he is typing. I feel bad for this guy, kinda like that kid in high-school that you wanted to try and help to he wouldn't get made fun of.

was it really? I've been trying to remember that for awhile actually.

Not to get off subject, but are you a movie guy? There is another funny "B" movie I watched years ago that I'd like to find again. Something about a big diamond a lady had, a big hotel, 2 guys, funny, etc... I remember some dumb scene about the girls sister worshiping some funny god thing. Banana-Rama or something.

Oh yea, and that link at the beginning of the thread has caused me to pee myself twice tonight. I havn'y laughed that loud in a long time.
