A lot of folks are wondering if The Statue of Liberty Race will take place this year. YES it will. Here is what happened:
Last winter the Coast Guard issued a new set of regulations regarding the the Statue and Ellis Island, including the extension of the security areas (from 150 to 400 yards). This made the rounding of the monument virtually impossible. We obtained a grandfathered status for our event on the condition that we provide them background check information including DOB and SSN for every participant before the end of June. To comply, we created a secure web site to handle this confidential information and were ready to broadcast this to the catsailor community, hoping that sailors will pre register, but also knowing that this type of information is not easy to give on the Internet.
Last month, we learned from the authorities that the 400 yards security zone will not be in place this year, hence BACKGROUND CHECK IS NOT REQUIRED.
We still have the pre-registration site running (without DOB and SSN) and we strongly invite you to pre-register (go to fleet 250.org), this will help our planning and organization. No payment is involved.
The event is on July 4th (July 5th is the make-up day). It is open to ALL multihulls.
Thanks to all, and come prepared for a great event.
