Great informative board!

Looking to get into sailing and have a chance to get my hands on a Hobie Wave if I can ship it+the trailer across country? Does anyone have advice on who does this kind of shipping?

Where do you live? Where does the boat and trailer have to get from and to?

Idaho to Dallas?

I can top that. I need to get one hull (SuperCat 17) from Los Angeles to Tampa. Any ideas? Traditional methods are >$500 for packaging and shipping.

Since broken boat photos are hip this week, see the attached photo to see why we need a new hull.

David...

How did you manage to do that?...My money would be that your Super Cat was built by Boston Whaler, NOT BY Matrix Marine/Aquarus Sails/ARC...still...even if it's a Boston Whaler model...that would make it something like 21-23 years old...if it was sailed often, I would say it gave it's moneys worth and then some...LOL

Hope you have luck shipping the replacement hull from California, or you find another one closer. As you already know, it's much too fun a boat to not get it back on the water...but if for some reason insanity kicks in and you part it out, let me know, I could always use some back up parts...LOL

Regards,
Bob

OK.

It's not my boat so this is hearsay. I'm a HUGE SuperCat 17 fan so when I heard that the bow broke off under mild sailing conditions I had to examine the "corpse" for myself. See the attached photo and see if you can spot the reason it broke.

Here is my theory. The hull appears to have seams top and bottom. I think after years of being dragged up the beach the bottom seam was simply sanded right through as you can see on the right side of the photo. No fault of Boston Whaler.

I've found a replacement hull in Big Bear near LA. How can I get it to Tampa? Jack Young at Performance offered to package it properly and ship it but this costs big bucks. Remember, this whole boat "retails" for about $1500 when intact.

Isn't someone driving the kids to see Micky in Orlando? Just lash the hull on top of your minivan and you'll never notice it is there.

I saw the same thing happen to another S17 a few years ago.
It wasn't very windy, it didn't hit any thing, the starboard hull just snapped off.
It appeared that the blind lap joint along the keel did not glue properly.
The fiberglass lip was barely connected.

Well, jworks, I guess nobody is going to answer you, so here are my suggestions:
First call some trucking companies and see what they recommend.
Or, you could pay somebody to trailer the boat down for you.
Or, you could drive up and trailer it back yourself.

The boat itself is not a problem -- the Wave is fairly easy to package. It normally comes new in two long cardboard boxes. But I think the trailer would be difficult.

The best idea would be to buy a boat locally -- there are lots of cats in the Dallas area -- big Hobie fleet. If you are going to start sailing, you should get in touch with them. They also have a learn-to-sail program every spring. Their website is http://fleet23.com/

jworks,

I sold a Hobie Wave to a guy in St. Louis. I live in Pensacola, Florida. We negotiated that we'd meet in Birmingham, Alabama. It worked out well for both of us and saved him about 8 hours of additional driving. He picked the boat up, then turned around and drove home. Maybe you could negotiate something similar, although you are talking about a longer distance.

Good luck!

Hey Todd,

Yes, I had a Wave for a while. Actually, I bought it for my two daughters. It was ok for a while, but they preferred to go out with their friends 3 or 4 at a time, and the old Wave couldn't quite handle that, and then they started spending all their time surfing. So, I got rid of it.

Not sure if you've found a way to ship the hull yet...but when I needed to move a whole Tornado from RI to Los Angeles, Vanguard Sailing boats in RI stepped in and put the dismantled boat in one of their 18 wheeler trucks for a regular delivery run of their dinghies to the west coast. Cost me $700 total for the whole boat and I got it in about a week...right to my front door.

Mike.
