To let you guys know that this is out there, check out: http://www.ussailing.org/membership/insurance/ Looks like a great deal for personal boat insurance!

John W, if your looking, how can we get other one design multihulls added to the list? It looks like Hobie did their homework.

To clarify, it was the Hobie Class Association that was the driver to have the Hobie classes added. Initially, multihulls were specifically excluded.

That's at least one answer to the question "What has the Hobie Class done for me?"

Not to discredit US Sailing insurance program, but I found a better rate & more coverage (agreed value) from Boat US...and they also cover racing.

Mike.

I've been shopping around myself and I've found coverage from State Farm (my existing auto and home insurance company) and Progressive insurance here in South Carolina. Apparently offerings vary from state to state. Progressive has a slightly better price and although I've never dealt with them before, they have thusfar been extremely courtious, helpful, and patient over the phone. Both offerings cover racing (not racing for cash prizes however) and the Progressive plan is a "replacement" policy where they don't bother depreciating your boat. If your boat was totaled, they find a boat of the same year or newer with the same equipment and write a check for that boat. If they can't find one of that year, they buy you a newer or new one. I thought that was neat.

I'm still waiting to hear from Boat U.S. but I was not as impressed with the attitude of the people I spoke with. They told me that they would put a quote together and call me today after bouncing me around between three different (and rather bored sounding) representatives.

I was quoted at about $200 a year from Progressive for a policy to cover my new F18 that has a $500 deductible, $100,000 liability, uninsured boater, and full comprehensive including the trailer valued at $2000. The State Farm plan was nearly identical (slighly more) but was an "agreed value" plan that simply puts a value on my boat based on it's age.

This does NOT include chartering insurance. I noticed that the US sailing insurance seemed to indicate that it did but further examination on the insurance provider's website said that that was additional. That insurance plan is also the same kind of "replacement" plan and not an "agreed value" plan (which depreciates the boat).
