After a few weeks on Folly Beach and one day of great sailing, Charlie flipped my 5.2 and snapped the mast. The Danforth and ten feet of chain kept the boat from going anywhere... except over. If anyone knows of a 5.2 mast for sale round-abouts Charleston, S.C., let me know.
A little belated but, what is the best way to secure a cat on the beach? I've already received some advice. Surfer guy said, "Dumb-a** should have taken his mast down."
Thanks for any help.
Doug

I think in this case Surfer Guy might have been correct.

Dig two holes in the ground on either side of your sidestay chainplates and put a plank or 2 by 2 in it. Tie lines to these and burry then. These are called ground anckors. Position your boat i the middle and tie it off to the chainplates or even using the trapeze wires. Fro grassland the same will work but here special spiral ground ankers can bought that screw themselfs in and are strong enough. We use these methodes all the time here on the beaches and we do get some major storms during our sailing sailing.

When expecting a hurricane than it is best to take of your mast as well as these storms are strong enough to uproute houses.

We have used masts in stock. We ship all over the world.

Check with your insurance company. It might be covered under home owners/renters.

On how to save the boat. Taking the mast down is the simplest way but filling your hulls with water (Not all the way up) is another solution. Let common sense be your guide on how full to fill them.

I have a good 5.2 mast in Va Beach, VA. If you know anyone racing in this area or coming your way from this area, let me know. I'll be in Hatteras on the 28th and 29th for the Camp Hatteras race. I'm also doing the H14 Nationals in Syracuse and can bring it with me. You can contact me at: danberger@mindspring.com

I have my n5.2 on a grass beach and i use four screw in anchors from menards. I put one at each corner of the tramp and this has held up even with wind gusts to 60 mph. BUT...I had an h16 that wasn't so lucky. I had it tied down and it managed to blow forty yards away after my mast speared through a little Saturn car. Funny thing was, the h16 sitting next to mine was still there even though it wasn't tied down. But it didn't have a tramp. Food for thought.

Speared through little car? Umm this may be a little criptic and perhaps an inapropriate sense of humor, but please tell me you happen to have pictures of that? I would really like to se them, cause the picture in my head is really funny.

Doug, there are 3 5.2s here in Columbia, none of which are being sailed. You could get the whole boat for a song.
Check out www.seacats.org classifieds, and post a wanted on there. Come to the Outback Regatta in October, I can hook you up with 2 of the owners.

If a Hurricane is coming you should take the boat off the beach and away from the coast. The storm surge is what gets the boat. After several hurricanes here in Wilmington NC,Wrightsville Beach banned catamarans from the beach because people were not responsible for their boats and let them end up in other peoples' yards and did not clean them up. The homeowners got mad and went to the town and now no more boats on the beach overnight. There used to be 200 boat regattas at Wrightsville Beach and now they don't want us because some weekend sailors got tired of their boats and left them to rot on the beach.
