Going with hooter next year. Local sailmaker suggests that I go with CDI's flexible furler. Has anybody tried this furler and is it proper to cut down a stock spinn for this use? Thanks, Mike

FIrst of all, point me to this furler system you refer to. Love to see what it looks like and what it has to offer.
I have been using Harkens furler Harken Furler with retriever line guide

On the sail itself, you are far better off to have the sail made new. Spinnakers and Hooters are very differently shaped. The performance of the Hooter is far more versatile, however -- it sails upwind, on a reach and down wind.
Downwind you need to heat up the boat a bit more than on a spinnaker as it the leading edge that has all the lift, not the amount of sail and the big shoulder.
Good luck,
Rick

Found maker at www.sailcdi.com
Recommended for daysailors and cruisers with great reviews after searching. I'm being recommended the Fx2
Thanks,

Ooops! Sorry, I thought you were sailing a beach cat of some kind. The furlers you are looking at are for bigger cruising boats and would be heavy, bulky and hard to use for a small boat.
It uses a part for the luff of your sail that is really not necessary.
The Hooters come with a non-stretch line built into the luff of the sail and therefore you do not need the luff support of that big boat furler. That would be redundant and not at all necessary.
All you need to do with a Hooter is hook the head to the roller at the top and the tack to the furler drum and you are off and running.
Don't know the prices, but bet the Harken is better and cheaper.
The Harken furler works for small cats (Wave, e.g.) and the larger size works for bigger multihulls (Corair F31R, e.g.)
If you have a smaller boat, stick with the Harken. Your sailmaker probably recommended that furler as it looks like it might work for cruising boats and he might be more familiar with that sort of thing.
