Posts: 591 Bradenton, FL | For the past few years I've been driving a van route for a school. Twice each school-day I'd pass by this house and see a pair of NACRA bows in the backyard, all dirty from disuse. Until today, I could never get ahold of the owner. Today I swung by after my route was done and was fortunate enough to catch him leaving the house and flag him down.
He says it's a Nacra 17, and he's replaced some of the rigging (I believe he meant running rigging), some of the blocks, and added the spinnaker kit. He said the mainsail is in good shape. I believe it has the aluminum mast, and not the carbon-fiber one.
The boat comes with a trailer, and he would help me clean it all up, put everything together, and fix anything that was broken so I would end up with a fully-functional boat and trailer.
I've been looking to get into racing, and this could be the perfect machine to do it. (I could leave my G-Cat on the beach, and this boat on the trailer!)
So, in good condition, what is the value of this boat?

Posts: 591 Bradenton, FL | 5.5 meters is actually a little over 18 feet. 5.2 meters is in the 17 feet range. I looked up some pictures of Nacra 5.2s and I don't think it's one of those. It has the big square bows of the Nacra/Inter 17. That's how I knew it was a Nacra by only seeing the front half of it for a second or two as I drove by in the van.
Anyhow- assuming it is a Nacra/Inter 17, what would it be worth? If it's not that boat, I'm probably not interested.

Posts: 106 NW Washington | Is it listed in NADA? I just went there, nada.com, navigated to used boats, looked up Performance Cat. It has a Nacra 5.0 listed as 17'. Anyway, I used NADA quite a bit before finding and buying my nacra 450. Sometimes they don't have all the years and models. Sometimes they include the trailer in the blue book price.
It gives a high and low price. I also tracked these prices with sold cats on ebay. I found the NADA to be fairly accurate compared to those sales on ebay. Almost always within 20%. My searches were in the $500 to $2500 range.
Cheers, Danno

Posts: 552 | I 17 hunter, I would look a 2 things. 1). Look at the daggarboard wells. Is the 'top' of the well fashioned to allow the board to slide all the way down, being flush with the deck but allowing room for you to put your hand in and pull the boards up? ..if so, looks like a I-17 2) Ask to see the Daggarboard. Is there a insert at the top to put your hand in, so as to grab the board while adjusting it? There will be no rope or rubber fittings on the board. The board has a almost square bottom, with slightly rounded corners. The width of the board is the same dimension, top to bottom. ..if you can identify these features, it is a 'I' series daggarboard. Or ask to see the mainsail, in it will be the class symbol and a number. The class symbol is a big red I-beam 'I'. under this 'I' will be a '17' about 1/5th smaller in size( when compared to the big 'I') If you find the above to be true, you have a nice find. It cannot be in that bad a shape, for the boat came out in 2000. Price; they are hard to find. I saw a distress sale go for $7000 on the 'R' version. It was in the Catsailor CLassified about 4 months ago. That was a great deal fo someone. regards, Bruce I-17 UVSI | | | A good trick

Posts: 9,582 North-West Europe | A good rule of thumb is this
price new when bought
subtract 15% for the first season and 10 % for each season after that till about 6 seasons than subtract 5 % for each extra season till you reach its base value of 10% of new when it is in sailing condition.
Add some if the condition it is in = good
subtract some when it is in bad condition.

Posts: 591 Bradenton, FL | So today I dropped by his house and actually went into the backyard and looked at the boat. It's a NACRA 5.0 (which works out to 16'6")
I'm kinda bummed. While this would be the perfect boat to buy to use for parts to build the F14 I'm designing, I'm currently trying to save up ~$20k by next summer to buy a large enough sailboat to live aboard. I've been finding some nice, decently well equipped Searunner 37s for this price. So... I have to pass on the NACRA.
