Hi all,
I'm looking at buying a used a-cat and at the moment I have my eyes on a Auscat Mk3 from 1993. The cat has new mast, boom, sail and battens from 2000.
The hulls are outer layer kevlar and inner skin carbon.
The boat came 3rd in Kielerwoche in 2002.

Would this boat be competetive today?
What should I look for?

All input appriciated

Patrik

I am not an A Class specailist but what I know -

The mark 3 has aloy beams and mast and the hulls are non canted. Not very cometitive.

I'd look for a mark 4 or 5 with canted hulls and all carbon accessories.

Mark 5 is very simular to the Flyer. From the AUS A Class guys there is not much difference between these boats. The flyer being the weapon off choice for the guns but have been told mark 5 is as good as any.

Expect to pay AUD$18000 + for a flyer platform plus another 5 or 6 for the rig.

I assume that is a staged pic as it does not look very windy judging by the sea state :

Thanks for the input! and the pic, love it!

If bought the beams will be replaced by me with carbon, hoopefully strikerless and with canting hulls during the winter. And the mast and boom is already in carbon. I was mostly wondering about underwater shape development since 1993. Was has happened?

Over the waterline things has happened, but it's much harder to see from photos what if anything substancial has happened to underwter shape.

Still looking for input!

The older boats like Mark3 will weigh much more (200-220 pounds= 93-100 kg) more than switchover (about 1999?) to 75 kg (165 pounds). Carbon mast is 22 vs 40 pounds for aluminum. Big parts like crossbars, boom save a little weight each, little parts like tiller extensions- it is getting hard to lose much more. You will still end up with plenty of kilos maybe 85 or 90!

This particular boat is 75KG, and during the winter I will fit new beams in carbon that will cant the hulls.
So still looking for what the difference is below the waterline.
