I am nearing completion of a possible "1 of a kind" cat. A while back I put a Tornado self-tacking jib, carbon pole/snuffer system and Tornado chute on my P19 (what used to be a MX. I got rid of all the mess on the tramp and have either run "the ropes" through the beams or use take up systems. The final touch is my waiting on new sails to complete the project. Charlie Ogletree is designing a main using a combination Tornado and Prindle 19 template. The new main and jib will be made of Cuben fiber. Christmas came a little early this year.

Should make an interesting FUN MACHINE. Will post pics when sails arrive.

I might have to take a drive up to Crystal Beach and see this boat in action!

Your ideas sound interesting as I've been toying with adding a chute to my P19. What is "Cuben Fiber"? I've never heard of that. I'm interested to see photos of how you've cleaned up your tramp. The mess with the 4-way jib system is annoying on a P19. We frequently find ourselves trying to pull on a line only to realize we're sitting on it or it's tangled with something else. Any ideas what your new rating will be? Greg

Brian,
I'll let you know when the sails have arrived and come on up to the causeway. I am presently running the set up, using my MX main.

Greg,
This link, http://www.sailinganarchy.com/general/2003/cuben%20fiber.htm, gives you a little info about the sail cloth. Hey, I sail pretty much year round, do the odd race and am not overly concerned about rating, so why not experiment a little.

The tramp thing on the P19 has always been a negative about the boat. With the Tornado self-tacker, ALL the mess that was associated with the jib is gone. Even without going with this type of jib setup, you can get rid of most of the clutter. Just ask yourself...How often to you use the fore/aft or inboard/outboard adjustments? If not often, then you can probably get rid of most of what is on the tramp. Once I get everything put together, I'll get you a good pic of the tramp. Meanwhile I am attaching a rough pic to give you an idea of my progress with the tramp.

Does the self-tacking system work with the MX jib? I would think that you would have to use the standard jib.

Greg,
No, you can't use the MX jib with the self-tacking system. I am using the Tornado jib, which fits like it belongs on the boat. It just happens that the P19 is a "bit" longer when measured from the front of the mast to the bridle/forestay attachment. It is desirable to have the room for the jib to clear the mast. If you look at my "attachment" a few posts up this thread, you will see the Tornado jib. I will also attach a pic in this post.

Your boat looks great!

Obviously you will always race with the spin now since your jib won't help much down hill..

How does the boat go upwind with the higher aspect jib compared to the MX jib?

What do you think your provisional rating will be?

Hi Mark,

The Tornado jib "does" enable the boat to go to weather more efficiently than the MX jib. I was aware of that when I compared the MX jib to the stock P19 jib. A shade off the wind, the MX package has given me it's share of "knee-knockers". I sail solo most of the time. In a distance race a while back (with the Tornado jib) we were going to weather faster and higher than the fleet. That included a Taipan 4.9/chute and an I17R. (sailed by very good sailors) Both of which corrected out over us after we collected line honors.

I am anticipating "the complete package" (Slightly modified Tornado main, Tornado jib and Tornado spinnaker with an ever broadening grin. If it comes together like I think it might, it should keep me on the edge.

Haven't given the rating a whole lot of thought, just yet. I'll probably get the best number by starting with the stock P19 number and adjust for the mods from there.

Nice chatting with you. Appreciate your interest and thanks for the comment on the boat. She is well taken care of....to say the least. Attached pic
