Last season on O.C. (Fox) it was Seth and a Hobie 20. On Summerland (WB) they own a Hobie Getaway and soon... Hobie Waves racing.

Whats next?

Spongebob The Movie! Opening November 17th.

We haven't seen it yet, but they used a Hobie Getaway in a scene. I think Spongebob gets bumped off of a bouy or something.

My favorite is still the scene in "The Punisher" when the guy tries to escape machine gun fire by jumping on a catamaran. This is the one time I would say the jetski would have been a better choice. He didn't make it.

I supplied those 16s and sails. They spraypainted the black sails.Unfortunately, the boats were only dry land props!

Best ever catamaran scene in a movie (or at least funniest) has got to be Caddy Shack! (When they are at the yacht club) There are just boats all over the place, jet ski's, power boats, water-skier's - its insanely funny.

Last weekend, while we were waiting for the wind to fill in...Chris (crew extraordinaire) looked at me and said "waaaait a minute...this looks just like that scene in Jaws!". Good thing we were on a lake.

Years ago I watched the movie "On The Beach" (1959, Gregory Peck & Ava Gardner). In the background of one scene there clearly are several catamarans hauled up on the beach. Pretty far back for cats, no? Anybody got any ideas what was going on in Australia in 1959 where it was filmed? I can't find the video for rent anywhere.

The book is excellent. No mention of cats, however.

Talking about jaws, this is what a movies theater ones did to celibrate it 5th anniversery (?) or something.

The theater was right next to a man made pond and one of its walls was facing towards it.

So the hung a big white screen of the side and arranged for alot of old inner tires to act as seats for the viewer. One evening in the summer the customers showed up in bathing suits and watch the movie jaws from floating around on the tubes with the feet hanging overboard in the water.

Now, I'm sure that this made for extra emotions while watching the movies no matter how many times you say to yourself that is it just a movie !

Wasn't it a aqua cat or P cat or something ?

Wouter- The movie/TV industry calls this "Product Placement", and if the product is to be stupidly abused as in JAWS you choose dead boats like a Sizzler and a Sol Cat.

So was there a diabolical Dutchman with a scuba tank and a rubber back fin hired to liven up the pond movie? (We cannot do this in the USA any more because of loss of freedom due to the #%^&* lawyers). But Product Placement is alive and well, and has a long history. If you ever see old black and white US cinemas of the 1930s, everyone was continuously lighting up cigarettes. This new product- coffin nails- were pushed into popularity by the movie industries, and then World War II by the tobacco industry who hooked a generation of American GIs when they were busy liberating Holland and France.

Matt:

The short scenes for Sponge Bob Square Pants were done at Universal in the Jaws tank. Peanut worm productions is doing the film and the actual ocean shots were done with a NACRA F-18 (Which I sailed) and a NACRA 4.5 (Sailed by Michael Bradley).

I did the sailing consulting for the movies and like anything else that is shot in bulk I fully expect to make it all the way to the cutting rrom floor. But hey, you never know.

The original concept was to run over Patrick with the catamaran. Not sure that worked out though. The shark tank scenes gave them fits.

As always it was fun to be included in a MAJOR PRODUCTION in hopes of promoting the sport to kids!

Jacques (from Hobie Cat) delivered two new Getaways to the studio. One as backup. Jacques stayed for the day to help rig and configure the boat for the scene. They loaded the boat into a big pool with a blue screen background. The boat was mounted on a cart on tracks to be pulled along by cable. He says there is another tank there with Jaws in it as well. One note... if the shot gets in there, the tank was too shallow for rudders. He had to remove the blades and tape the castings together. Look for the missing blades. Would be a cult thing to see that! Mark's shots were to be background (maybe on the blue screen?). Jacques said they also planned to take the Getaway down to the beach for some shots.

One of the cats in the Thomas Crown Affair was owned by Art Stevens past Chair of the US SAILING Multihull Committee. It was a Formula 40. Lots of tails about this boat and the movie. Perhaps Art can add some information.

There was a romance-y kind of movie from the '80's that had a pretty cool catamaran race scene in it. I couldn't remember the name, but did a search and found that it was called Violets are Blue and starred Sissy Spacek and Kevin Kline.

I don't remember much else about it other than the race and the fact it showed Kevin Kline's naked tushie. I'm sure you'll all run right out and rent it now...
