been thinking about getting some contacts for the next sailing season, considering my eyes are too bad to have sunglasses made. but im still a little weary. any feedback would be appreciated, i dont think i want to do lasik yet, as they only shoot for 20/20 and consider 20/40 a successful surgery, and since i see 20/15 with lenses it may be blurry and i could still end up wearing glasses after the surgery. anyway.. thanks..

I wear daily disposables; never had a problem and the beauty is that after sailing you can sling them and put a sterile pair back in; because they are quite big they stay place; even when under water, waves etc. Also, they have UV A/B filters and I usually don't wear shades.

I wear contacts while sailing also. I just take them out and wash them when I get home and put them back in the next day.

Worn contacts for years - use disposables now. Never thought to take them out and replace them after sailing.

I have lost a couple of lenses - one got washed out of my eye in some huge waves and the other got flicked out by the clew of a sail when I was derigging a boat.

I normally wear monthly lenses, but I buy one lot of disposables for the sailing season. They last the weekend and then I throw them. If it's a bit blowy I sometimes find one on my cheek or almost out of my eye, I pop it in my mouth until the race is over and then put it in again
There was more spray on the Dart 18 than the Spitfire - I have not lost one for a while. On one of my Irish Sea crossings on a Dart 18 ( trying to set a record - DunLaoghaire to Holyhead) I could not figure out why I could not read the GPS - both lenses had washed out - I should have worn goggles.

I wear contacts when I sail without any problems. I wear the kind that is "supposed" to be changed every three months......like that ever happens. I used to windsurf in the Gorge in gnarly conditions, looping, jumping, crashing at superspeed and never lost a contact. I've opened my eyes underwater a few times for a split second, before remembering I shouldn't be doing that and still haven't lost one. You'd be surprised how quick your eyes shut when a wall of water is coming towards them.

There was one time my contact got folded underneath itself, but I was able to fix it quickly. Windsurfing, I wear no sunglasses, but have them on 95% of the time when on the cat. Just make sure you have well fitting contacts and mention that you sail to your optometrist and he/she may be able to help.
