Having just stumbled across this forum the other day, I am intrigued by the thinking behind F14. I have a Hobie Twixxy (Hobie Europe 14', rotomoulded hulls, twin trapeze and spinnaker) and have been playing this winter with putting a larger suit of mylar sails and a boom on it. Next step is 'better' rudders (the standard ones stall too easily) and possibly a bigger spinnaker. I think the boat will comply with the F14 rules as set out in this forum, but what is the official status of the F14? Can I put an F14 logo on the sail? What yardstick would I have to sail to? What sail number should the boat carry? Please forgive me if some or all of these questions have already been answered elswhere.....BTW is there a webpage for F14 or a set of FAQs?
Look forward to a response, Thanks.

I don't think we have any formalized thing going here. It seems just a bunch of folks with small boats that want to soup them up to about the same speed and at least be closer to the same handicap number, thus getting more boats to regattas and on the starting line.

Just re-read most of the early posts and you will see how it started and where it has gone.
Interest has ebbed a bit lately.

Just keep the sail area under 300 sq. ft. and you're pretty much class legal with your boat. You can put an F14 logo on your sail, and keep your current sail number.

Hi, all, This Saturday, 26th we raced the new Alpha Omega F14 in the Goolwa to Milang “classic” race here in South Australia, (the race starts at Goolwa which is at the mouth of the Murray river and sails up river to Lake Alexandrina then across the lake to the port of Milang, it is quite a “marathon” and, yes the Alpha F14 went about as well as we expected it to at this stage in its “testing” phase. Saturday was the first time that we had actually sailed it with the spinnaker, and the results were very favourable! We expect to improve its performance quite considerably when we have sailed it more, and come to grips with its “best points of sail” instead of sailing other boats races.
We have a VYC yardstick for the “standard” 4.3 Alpha which is 88, but we asked the race committee to use 84 as the rating for this race with “kite” – they actually thought that it may be penalising us a little too much, as it put us into division H which has all the 16’ cats (minus Taipan 4.9’s) as well as the lightweight, asymmetric spinnaker 20’ Yvonne’s.
The F14 is almost at the “commercial” stage now with only a little more racing to do to finish testing all the fittings, componentry, etc, and to race compare it to a few other classes on the same courses.
Below is a copy of some the official placing’s and times for the Goolwa – Milang race sailed on Saturday the 26/2/05.

Thanks Sycho15,

What was the eventually agreed logo?

Whilst Australia and the US seem to have an active F14 class developing, the UK and Europe seem to be lagging behind. Unless someone knows otherwise?

John,

I've got the vector artwork for this logo that might save you some time. I would be glad to make them for you but the shipping alone to the U.K. would be prohibitively expensive. Send me a note to jakekohl[at]charter.net (replace the [at] with @) and I'll send you the vector artwork so a sign shop won't have to spend any design time to recreate it for you.
