brake cleaner, bought at any auto parts store will eliminate red clay stains from anything.

just be careful to not use it on rubberized materials.

and it will take the wax off the boat.

Can the brake cleaner be used on clothing and carpeting?

yes but it smells worse than wd40. I can't really tell you to go ahead and use it without warning you that it could possibly destroy whatever you use it on. Its a very hard chemical thats meant to be used on metal car parts.

I know it works on red clay because I used it to unjam my centerboard trunks on the H17 after I drove it up on a red-clay beach.

You guys almost have me talked out of this regatta. I'm planning to cover the entire inside of the motorhome with plastic.

And just one more question: What kind of disaster can I expect from the interaction of our dog with the red clay?

Mary,

It's not so bad as long as the lake level is high (which it is). The lake has been very very low (like 11' below normal) for several years prior to last year which leaves a long red clay "beach" to traverse to get to and from your boat. When the lake is high most of the landing areas are grassy and the areas closest to the bank aren't so bad. People still have the visions of years past tainting their memories! There are occasional honest sandy beaches on the lake in spots too.

I'm planning to just show up and see what happens. I had an F14 to borrow but the boat isn't going to be ready in time. I'm bringing my camera gear and maybe a laptop to store/view the pictures on, and will either find a skipper to crew for or help the race committee when I'm not busy taking pictures.

That is, of course, provided my vehicle makes it. I've got an '85 Jeep J10 that I paid $200 for two years ago, some assembly required. It had sat in a garage for 10 years, and still hasn't been washed I've recently put it back on the road and it's been my daily-driver the past month with a couple hour-long interstate trips so far.

Nothing like a 10hour, 550mile drive (each way) to test out the old beast.

Hey, on the Spring Fever website, there is a list of people attending (pre-registered). I noticed a few (like 5 maybe?) that needed crew. You could maybe contact one of them instead of chancing it. Just a thought........back to calc2 and physics for me....

Rick, that is the F14 I had mentioned in my post. They were going to do a quick refurbish on a used boat for Spring Fever, but when they picked up the boat it didn't have dagger boards, rudders, a trampoline or sails. The manufacturer has to make all new ones.

Just got back from Lake Hartwell... drove home in that nasty stuff all afternoon, really made traffic a pain in the butt.

Had a great time, especially with today's conditions... and of course the parties by themselves made the trip worthwhile all on its own.

I didn't make it, tore the front axle of my truck apart to replace the wheelbearings Thursday, and found a lot more work to get done. Now I'm rebuilding the entire front axle- oh joy! I need to have both axles and a few other things in road-trip condition for a few camping/four-wheeling trips I have planned this summer.
